State Approved Course Coding Project Update – Timeline Extended

In our February 3 Data and Technology Newsletter, we notified districts of an upcoming effort to create standardized course codes that were to be implemented by the fall of 2020. Because of the vast differences identified in district course reporting, we have decided to work individually with districts over the coming school year. Districts will be asked to eliminate the use of ambiguous SCED codes and create course descriptions with the help of their curriculum coordinators and teachers. It is through this process, and with the districts help, we hope to create an extended course coding system that will work for all forty-eight districts, while capturing the information that is necessary to automate the post-secondary readiness indicators for accountability, Career and Technical Education, Hathaway and virtual education course approval, and other processes.

We ask districts to reach out to Susan Williams and schedule a time to meet with Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) staff. We encourage you to include curriculum coordinators, student information system (SIS) managers, and any personnel who enter course information in your SIS. The WDE is hoping to meet with one district per week. We need to finalize changes to the WDE638 and send them to the SIS vendors so the more districts we can meet with in the near future the better.  Districts will be required to use the state approved course codes in the 2021-22 school year.

Thank you to the State Approved Course code pilots (Carbon #2, Johnson #1, Natrona #1, Uinta #4, and Washakie #1) who have helped us to initiate this work, we appreciate your help in getting the ball rolling.

2019-20 School Performance Report

The WDE will publicly release partial school performance reports on September 1, 2020. Schools will not receive an overall school performance rating but will receive the WAEA target levels and the ESSA norm categories for the indicators that the WDE is able to calculate. Districts will be asked to review their student level ACCESS data file June 29-July 3 in the Confidential Assessment portal. Data will be considered final at the end of the review window. The confidential school performance report review window will be August 13–August 26.
