Lori Pusateri-Lane is WDE's new ELA and Fine and Performing Arts Consultant in the Standards and Assessment Division. Lori started her career in education in rural Alaska, then later taught in Montana and Wyoming.
Most recently, she taught sixth- through eighth-grade English at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Cheyenne. Lori grew up in Nebraska and earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her master's at the University of Wyoming.

Alicia Wilson is the new Math and Computer Science Consultant in WDE's Standards and Assessment Division. A lifelong Cheyenne resident, Alicia graduated from the University of Wyoming and began teaching math to seventh- through 12th-graders in Burns in 2012.
During that time, she completed a master's degree in Middle Level Mathematics, a program with a strong focus on coding and robotics, which sparked her interest in computers. She recently learned to code and build websites at The Array School of Technology and Design.

The Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) is excited to announce the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Certification for Educators training opportunity for Wyoming teachers.
The WDE is partnering with Arizona Technology in Education, one of the organizations ISTE has authorized to deliver the training, to support 100 teachers through the certification process. ISTE certification is a professional competency-based program focused on pedagogy that transforms learning through the use of education technology.

January 9-10, 2020, in Riverton
The Wyoming Department of Education invites K-12 teachers to participate in a two-day professional development workshop in Riverton. Registration is free.

If you're using GIS technology in your classroom (or would like to), consider developing a project to compete in Wyoming's second ArcGIS Online competition. Provided by software company Esri, K-12 schools have free access to their mapping tools. This includes building compelling online content such as story maps and mapping applications for things like Citizen Science.
Winners of Wyoming's contest win $100 for their school and a chance for a free trip to San Diego for Esri's Users Conference in July. The deadline for submitting projects is May 15, 2020.

January 19-21, 2020 in Gillette
The WMEA State Conference exists to improve all aspects of music education in Wyoming. Attendees have the opportunity to participate in professional development sessions presented by master music educators from across the United States.
Sessions cover a wide range of topics including teaching techniques, fostering creativity, assessment strategies, selecting music literature, and making music accessible to all children.
PTSB and UW credits are available.

The Wyoming Library Association and the Wyoming State Literacy Association jointly sponsor three awards: the Buckaroo Book Award for children in grades K-3, the Indian Paintbrush Book Award for children in grades 4-6, and the Soaring Eagle Book Award for youth in grades 7-12.
The purpose is to provide an opportunity for youth of Wyoming to read and select favorite books and to honor the authors of those books.

For over 20 years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Wyoming has hosted the Laws of Life Essay Contest, now called the American Dream Essay Contest.
This year, the partnership continues with James P. Owen, author of the books Cowboy Ethics, Cowboy Values, and The Try, to offer youth a way to pursue their vision regarding the meaning of their lives and the ethics that guide them.

Letters About Literature is a state-level reading/writing promotion program for students in grades 4-12. Students are asked to read a book, poem, or speech and write to the author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally.
Students compete in three age categories: Level 1 (grades 4-6), Level 2 (grades 7-8), and Level 3 (grades 9-12). At each age level, Wyoming winners will receive an Amazon gift card worth $150 for first place, $100 for second, or $50 for third

The National Arts Action Summit is a multi-day event bringing together arts advocates from across the country.
Attendees will attend a full day of advocacy training to learn the latest research and legislative arts priorities from the experts.

Achieve recently released three new frameworks - one each for mathematics, reading, and science - for the educator community working on high-quality student assessments. The frameworks, which were developed by content experts and practitioners, can be used to evaluate the cognitive complexity of assessment items through a series of discipline-specific criteria and processes.

Active Schools offers seven 45-minute Active Classrooms webinars for classroom teachers, principals, physical education teachers and parents.
Classroom grants are also available, and you can receive 5 bonus points on your grant application(s) for each webinar that is viewed by someone from your school. Applications close Feb. 28.

The Stanford History Education Group offers Civic Online Reasoning, curriculum featuring free lessons and assessments that help you teach students to evaluate online information that affects them, their communities, and the world. |

C-SPAN offers classroom resources, including current events videos, lesson plans, On This Day in History events, U.S. Constitution and the National Council for the Social Studies-endorsed Classroom Deliberations.
Professional development is also offered, as well as an annual video documentary competition for middle and high school students. The deadline for submitting videos is January 20.

Applications are open for the annual White House History Teacher Institute. Hosted in Washington, D.C., at the David M. Rubenstein National Center for White House History, this five-day experience will feature discussions with historians, local site visits, inquiry based learning activities, and more.

Ford’s Theatre and various museums and historic sites around Washington, D.C., offer two summer professional development institutes about the Civil War's impact on the city of Washington and how the war has been remembered over time. The city becomes the classroom as teachers interpret historic sites, monuments and memorials.
