WYOMING DIGITAL LEARNING PLAN

February 2019

Welcome to the Digital Learning Plan (DLP) monthly newsletter

This newsletter will explore the Wyoming Department of Education’s (WDE) Digital Learning Plan (DLP), its goals, and suggested strategies to ensure equitable access to opportunities for students.

Future newsletters will provide resources for districts to create their own action plans/implementation plans for achieving these goals.

Refresh your memory

The WDE is required to develop and implement a statewide digital learning plan ensuring equitable access to digital learning opportunities to all students. To address the state’s digital learning priorities, the WDE adopted the Future Ready Schools (FRS) Framework as the organizing structure for the plan and to ensure the transition is comprehensive and efficient.

Digital Learning

This framework serves as an organizational umbrella for all discussions and decisions related to the use of technology in the classroom and the technical, professional, and leadership support needed to ensure the most effective and efficient Future Ready practices.

The WDE’s DLP is a bold strategic plan to maximize digital learning opportunities and help school districts move quickly toward preparing students to be college, career, or military ready.

Vision

The WDE’s DLP is designed to provide a road map to Wyoming districts with recommendations for action planning that focuses on Digital Learning. This plan empowers all stakeholders to provide and expand learning opportunities, to be adaptable, and to evolve with the ever-changing learning environment to meet the needs of all Wyoming students.

Future Ready Roadmap

Impact

To make the DLP a reality by 2021, it will take time, resources, and partnerships across a variety of organizations and individuals working together. Empowered leaders will need to communicate the vision, provide resources and support for implementation, and monitor practices to ensure educators across the state have what they need to provide robust digital learning learning opportunities for students.

The Future Ready Framework provides a “robust structure for Digital Learning visioning, planning, and implementation focused on Personalized Student Learning.” The research-based Framework includes severn key areas, or gears, that are critical to address during a comprehensive planning process. The seven gears are as follows:

Future Ready Gears
  • Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
  • Personalized Professional Learning
  • Robust Infrastructure
  • Data and Privacy
  • Community Partnerships
  • Budget and Resources
  • Use of Space and Time

There is also a strong emphasis on collaborative leadership where state, district, and school leadership vision, plan and implement, and assess continually to create an innovative school culture of continuous improvement.

Innovative Ideas:

  • Virtual307.com - provides a searchable database of all virtual education classes offered in Wyoming. Interactive features facilitate communication between districts about gauging student interest in classes, pre-registering for a course, and using a survey tool to identify class needs.
  • Wyoming's Digital Learning Plan
  • What does a Future Ready School look like?
  • ClassDojo- connects teachers with students and parents to build amazing classroom communities.
  • Ted Talks- a library of video lectures that cover a wide range of topics, and they can be used in the classroom to supplement what you are teaching
  • Innovate like a Turtle podcast- Take 15 minutes just two or three times a week to learn and try new things.
