The National Youth Science Camp is an annual education experience for recent high school graduates. Held each summer at Camp Pocahontas near Thornwood, West Virginia, the camp allows two students from each state to participate. Tentative dates are June 27-July 20, 2019.

The Barbara Petchenik Competition is a biennial map drawing competition for children in four age groups under age 16. The aim of the contest is to promote the creative representation of the world in graphic form by children. The U.S. winner will attend the International Cartographic Conference in Tokyo July 15-19, 2019.

The National Council for the Social Studies is the largest professional association in the U.S. devoted solely to social studies education and providing service and support for social studies teachers.
Registration is open for the 98th annual conference. The Korea Foundation is offering a $500 stipend for teachers who attend a pre-conference workshop.

Project deadline January 15, 2019
National Geographic invites teams of middle school students to submit innovative solutions to plastic pollution in waterways. Teachers serve as the main point of contact for schools and submissions. Teams who are chosen based on their proposals will be invited to present at regional and national-level competitions.

The White House Historical Association will host two sessions of educators next July. Participants will examine the more than 200-year history of the White House and its impact as a home, office, and museum.
The summer institute is open to all educators, including librarians, media specialists, curriculum coordinators, and classroom teachers. Priority will be given to middle and high school educators who work directly with students.

Applications for the 2019 Transatlantic Outreach Program's study tours to Germany are available.
Social studies and STEM educators are encouraged to apply for a two-week, fully funded professional development study tour, which will examine vital issues in contemporary German politics, business, society and education.

Full-time public and private school PK-12 teachers are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $5,000 to fund programs that bring technology into the classroom and promote innovative learning. Previous Wyoming awardees include Powell Middle School and Glenrock High School.

The American Chemistry Society-Hach Professional Development Grant supports high school chemistry teachers in advancing their professional development and enhancing the teaching and learning of chemistry in their classrooms. Teachers can request up to $1,500 to fund opportunities that will improve their professional skills and student achievement.

The Edgar C. Joy Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching recognizes one teacher for his or her leadership and innovation in Earth science education. The award consists of a $2,500 prize and a grant of up to $1,000 to enable the recipient to attend the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Annual Conference.

The mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Teacher at Sea program is to give educators a clearer insight into our ocean planet, a greater understanding of maritime work and studies, and increase their level of environmental literacy by fostering an interdisciplinary research experience. Teacher at Sea has sent over 700 teachers on NOAA research cruises. Lesley Urasky from Saratoga was the most recent Wyoming participant.

The CDC Science Ambassador Fellowship is for teachers and educational leaders interested in bringing public health sciences into middle- and high-school classrooms. This fellowship includes a five-day summer course at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, GA and a one-year distance-based professional development opportunity.

RESET provides educators with summer research experience at participating Army Laboratories. The goal is to reinforce teachers’ content knowledge through research experience and interactions with Army and Department of Defense scientists and engineers.
Upon completion of the program, teachers will be able to translate this knowledge and experience into enhanced STEM research curricula and enriched learning for their students.

A new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine examines research on ELs’ learning, teaching, and assessment in STEM subjects and provides guidance on how to improve learning outcomes in STEM for these students.
As a group, these students are underrepresented in STEM fields, but English learners bring a wealth of resources to STEM learning, including knowledge and interest borne out of their experiences in their homes and communities, home languages, variation in discourse practices, and in some cases, experiences with schooling in other countries.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7-12. Original submissions will need to exemplify technical skills and a personal voice or vision.

Students can make their voices heard by writing a letter to a member of Congress that explains a global issue they want Congress to prioritize. Winning letters will be published by the Pulitzer Center website, and profiles of winning students will be written by professional journalists.

NASA Langley Research Center’s Office of Strategic Analysis invites K-12 students to submit original artwork representing this year’s theme, “Explore.” Contest winners will earn various prizes and have their artwork publicly displayed at the Virginia Air & Space Center.
