NATIVE AMERICAN EDUCATION CONFERENCE

Aug. 8-9, 2018 St. Stephens and Riverton

Registration is open for the 2018 Native American Education Conference at Central Wyoming College and St. Stephens Indian School.

Opening keynote is Billy Mills, an Olympic gold medalist from the Oglala Lakota Nation. Turnaround Arts California will demonstrate how the arts can be utilized to reverse declining school performance.

Indoor and outdoor activities to inspire and empower youth will be offered for students in grades 7-12, who will be admitted free. Adult registration is only $25. The conference is open to all.

More than 80 workshops will address childhood trauma, suicide prevention, culturally responsive instruction, gang behavior, restorative justice, and understanding tribal heritage and traditions, among many other topics.

COMPUTER SCIENCE EDMODO GROUP

The Wyoming Department of Education has created a Computer Science Edmodo group for teachers to share resources with other computer science educators and receive updates from WDE. If you are interested in joining the group, visit the WDE Standards pagescroll down and click on the Statewide PLC on Edmodo link, then click on the Computer Science link.

UW TETON STEM SUMMER ACADEMY

August 5-10, 2018 in Laramie

The Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium is offering students entering 6th, 7th, and 8th grades the opportunity to explore the idea of a manned mission to Mars. Thanks to a generous donor, campers will pay only $75. Scholarships are available.

Application deadline is June 4, 2018.

NEXT GENERATION STEM TEACHING PROJECT

Application Deadline: June 1, 2018

The Next Generation STEM Teaching Project (NGSTP) offers selected teachers the opportunity to participate in an NSTA Next Generation Science Standards or Three-Dimensional Instruction workshop. Funding for a K-12 classroom project is also possible.

Verizon Foundation funding is intended to support projects that promote STEM, including summer or after-school programs, teacher training, and research on improving learning in STEM through use of technology.

CONGRESSIONAL APP CHALLENGE

Launches June 4, 2018

The Congressional App Challenge (CAC) is a public effort to encourage youth to learn how to code through annual competitions hosted by members of Congress in their districts. Students can win prizes and have their work put on display in the U.S. Capitol Building.

KHAN ACADEMY STUDENT CHALLENGE

Deadline: July 1, 2018

Khan Academy's Breakthrough Junior Challenge asks students to explain a big scientific idea in fundamental physics, life sciences, or mathematics with a short video. Students can win prizes worth up to a $250,000 scholarship, and their teachers can win $50,000.

CONSERVATION GRANTS: CONNECTING YOUTH TO THE OUTDOORS

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is offering grants to encourage youth to engage with the natural world and discover careers in conservation. Proposals are being accepted in two categories:

  • Engaging children from preschool to high school by integrating in-class and out-of-class experiences in conservation literacy and stewardship.
  • Supporting young people aged 16-25 in paid conservation corps and conservation-focused internships to connect young adults to the outdoors.

WYOMING ARTS COUNCIL FELLOWSHIP

The Wyoming Arts Council is accepting applications for fellowships in the following areas: 

  • Visual Arts: comprehensive portfolio
  • Performing Arts: media samples and artistic statements
  • Creative Writing: body of work that demonstrates exceptional writing

Each content area has a specific criterion for awarding the fellowship.

ART SOURCE SUMMER INSTITUTE

June 24-29, 2018, Greeley, Colorado

Join a cohort of educators in a five-day art workshop, becoming immersed in the art community and collaborating with teaching professionals, artists, and creative leaders. 

Cost is $500 which includes room and board, with $100 due at time of application. Optional graduate credit will be offered through the University of Northern Colorado.

Please nominate a state legislator or local official who has demonstrated his or her support of the arts and arts education. This is an opportunity to recognize and champion the leader’s contributions. The award will be presented by Americans for the Arts.

RELIGIOUS STUDIES SUMMER INSTITUTE

July 10-12 in Washington, D.C.

Applications are being taken for the first Summer Religious Studies Institute sponsored by the Newseum's Religious Freedom Center and the National Council for the Social Studies. 

The institute will help boost your confidence in teaching about religion. The seminar has been crafted to increase your knowledge of religious studies using various disciplinary concepts and tools, and to engage your students while meeting your instructional goals. 

Cost is $199 for NCSS members and $279 for non-members. Travel and lodging are not included.

CIVIC LEARNING SURVEY

Educators are being asked to participate in a survey about the quality of civic learning in the U.S. The survey was designed by Dr. Peter Levine of Tufts University and is being administered by the CIVIX Now Coalition, led by iCivics and CIRCLE. The results will be published in a white paper this fall.

The survey is part of a broader project to increase visibility and funding for civic learning that is being supported by the Carnegie, Hewlett and McCormick Foundations.
