Drinking Water is Not Impacted
When the staff for the City of Martinsburg’s Big Springs Water Treatment Plant reported to duty the morning of April 13, 2023, they discovered a body in the Waste Tank located adjacent to the water treatment plant. The City immediately called for Emergency Medical Services and the Berkeley County Sheriffs office.
The Waste Tank where the individual was discovered contains the impurities and other material that is removed from the drinking water prior to the final purification and distribution. None of the water in the Waste Tank is reintroduced into the drinking water and is transported to the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The City has consulted with all pertinent regulatory agencies to confirm the safety of the City’s drinking water. The City thanks all first responders and regulatory agencies who are assisting in this ongoing investigation.
