Hello from Mayor Shaundel
My first months in office have certainly been exciting. I have enjoyed the ribbon-cuttings, speaking at events, meeting with our students (those kindergarteners make me smile!) and presenting proclamations. But most importantly, I really love connecting with our citizens to hear about their concerns and hopes for our vibrant community. I also appreciate all of your well wishes as I learn about the responsibilities of this position and how I can best serve the residents, our businesses, and our visitors. Please continue to reach out to me through About the Mayor page, through social media (Facebook/cityoflacrossemayor) or call 608-789-7500 to speak with staff.
I welcome you to join a city committee to engage in city matters -- your opinion is valuable to us. Learn about Serving on a Committee or Commission
I look forward to seeing you around our beautiful city.

 Stormwater Utility Proposed Rate Increase
This is notice that the La Crosse Stormwater Utility has conducted a Rate Study which is proposing a rate increase effective July 1, 2025. This increase will be reflected on the quarterly billing statements beginning in October 2025. The Stormwater Utility was established in 2011 and is an enterprise fund for which stormwater related revenues and expenditures are separate from the City of La Crosse’s general tax levy, and rates have not increased since its inception. The rate increase is needed due to significant increases in operating expenses and capital project costs over the past decade, and to ensure the financial health of the Stormwater Utility.
Why do we need a Stormwater Utility Fee?
The stormwater system in La Crosse captures runoff from rain and melting snow that flows off building rooftops, driveways, lawns, streets, parking lots, and construction sites that then drain to stormwater pipes underground which is then discharged to a local body of water since these developed areas do not allow water to soak into the ground. Stormwater runoff is not treated like wastewater before it is discharged.

System Flushing - June 1 - June 22
The La Crosse Water Utility started its annual water system flushing program this month. Please note that flushing will be conducted during the overnight hours, Sunday through Thursday, between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Generally, flushing will end at about 5:45 AM to allow the water system to settle before daytime water use increases. It usually takes three to four weeks to flush the entire water system.
Why does the city need to flush the system?
Clean pipes are essential for a clean, healthy water supply, and that is why the La Crosse Water Utility is committed to maintaining our comprehensive flushing program. However, flushing water mains can temporarily cause decreases in pressure, may cause short-term discoloration in the water affecting laundry operations, and may affect automatic flushing units and pressure sensitive equipment. If you do experience discolored water, run a cold tap in a basement faucet or bathtub for a few minutes until the water clears. During the flushing process, short-duration hydrant and crew noise, street flooding, and flashing vehicle safety lights can also be expected.

Work for us! Career Opportunities at City of La Crosse
I've been delighted to serve as the Library Director at La Crosse Public Library (LPL) since August 2019. However, this is actually my second time working at LPL.
I was first hired as a Library Clerk in 1991, while still a student at UW-La Crosse. Over the next 26 years, I advanced through various roles in the organization, eventually pursing a library degree. I went on to accept a directorship elsewhere, only to return a few years later to the place where I spent the majority of my career.
While the more than three decades spent at La Crosse Public Library has been not only a passion but a privilege, I look forward to retiring. I will be excited to focus on reading for pleasure, spending more time with family and friends, and traveling abroad. I love the La Crosse community, and I will forever hold our amazing library and its mission close to my heart.
