BCPL, Secretary Godlewski Approve $3.4 Million in Financing for Sun Prairie Library Expansion Project

Madison, WI – The Board of Commissioners of Public Lands (BCPL), chaired by Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski, approved $3.4 million in financing for the City of Sun Prairie to support the expansion of the Sun Prairie Public Library.

The Sun Prairie Public Library, built over 25 years ago, will use the approved funds to expand its footprint and increase vital community services. In collaboration with the community, the library’s leadership has outlined specific goals for the expansion, which include creating new private spaces for remote workers, a makerspace with specialized equipment for STEM and art projects, and a large outdoor amphitheater. Notably, the library also plans to convert its large atrium space—currently serving as an extreme weather shelter—into a community resiliency center.

“Public libraries are the heart of our communities,” said Secretary Godlewski. “They provide vital access to resources, technology, and opportunities for lifelong learning that enrich the lives of people of all ages. I’m thrilled that we’re able to provide the financing needed so Sun Prairie can meet the needs of its growing community and continue to serve as a hub for innovation, education, and connection.”

“The City of Sun Prairie is immensely grateful for the significant funding,” said Mayor Esser. “This investment goes beyond bricks and mortar. It extends to creating an innovative space where our community can thrive by learning, growing, and connecting together. The expanded library will provide more resources, increased access to technology, and an inclusive environment for community members of all ages and backgrounds.”

“This expansion project is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” added Svetha Hetzler, Director of Library Services. “We are incredibly excited to bring this library into the new century and continue our service to the Sun Prairie community.”

Secretary Godlewski said, “I’m proud of our ability through the State Trust Fund Loan Program to help Sun Prairie finance this important project that will be a great asset to their growing community.”

Background

Established in 1848 by the Wisconsin Constitution, the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands is Wisconsin’s oldest state agency. The board is comprised of Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski (Chair), State Treasurer John Leiber, and Attorney General Josh Kaul.

Since 1871, BCPL has invested in loans to municipalities and school districts for public purpose projects through the State Trust Fund Loan Program. Today, BCPL is among the largest public investors in economic development projects and local infrastructure projects within the State of Wisconsin. Interest earned from this loan program is given back to the community through an annual distribution of library aid to public schools across the state.
