Gov. Evers Appoints Matthew Spence as Sheboygan County Sheriff |
MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today appointed Matthew Spence as Sheboygan County Sheriff. The appointment fills a vacancy created by Sheriff Cory Roeseler’s retirement, effective June 3, 2024. Spence will complete the remainder of the unexpired term that ends January 2027. “With more than two decades of service in the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew Spence is an experienced law enforcement officer who is committed to his community,” said Gov. Evers. “I am confident he will serve the people of Sheboygan County well as their next sheriff.” Spence has spent his entire law enforcement career with the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin (UW)–La Crosse and the Wisconsin Police Corps, he became a patrol deputy in November 2002. Since then, he has risen through the ranks to become the current captain of patrol and criminal investigations, where he oversees the annual department budget, coordinates training, and supervises all sworn officers. During his more than twenty years of service, he has also pursued further educational opportunities, including a master of public administration degree with a law enforcement administration emphasis from UW–Oshkosh, and graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2022. “I am confident that Matt Spence will do a great job as the next sheriff of Sheboygan County,” said retiring Sheboygan County Sheriff Cory Roeseler. “His education, training and experience has positioned him to successfully lead the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office into the future.” In addition to his career in law enforcement, Spence is actively involved in the community. He serves as a coach for Special Olympics and coordinates the law enforcement torch run, has coached youth soccer, and was the recipient of the 2019 Sheboygan County Civic Achievement Award. “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve with the men and women of the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office,” said Spence. “I look forward to overcoming the challenges ahead as we strive to provide quality services to the citizens of Sheboygan County.” A photo of Spence is available here. |
