DOA Secretary Brennan Presents $70,000 in Regional Coastal Grant Awards to Sheboygan Area Officials

Sheboygan, Wis. – Today, Wisconsin Department of Administration (DOA) Secretary Joel Brennan presented $70,000 in coastal grants to the City of Sheboygan and the Bay-Lake Regional Planning Commission (RPC). As part of the grant presentation, Secretary Brennan and Sheboygan Mayor Ryan J. Sorenson visited the accessible boat launch at the Kiwanis Park to showcase how funding from the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program (WCMP) advances outdoor recreation, equity and accessibility, shoreline restoration, and resource planning across Wisconsin. The visit highlighted the efforts of local and state government to enhance accessibility to outdoor recreation opportunities and create stronger and more resilient communities.

“Our goal is to balance the protection of our Great Lakes natural resources while supporting sustainable economic development,” said DOA Secretary Joel Brennan. “We are proud to work with the City of Sheboygan and the Bay-Lake Regional Planning Commission to preserve our natural resources, so they can be enjoyed by Wisconsinites and visitors in the years to come.”

Secretary Brennan and Mayor Sorenson viewed improvements that were made possible by previous grant funding, and to celebrate a $25,000 Coastal Grant to the City of Sheboygan for comprehensive outdoor recreation and coastal resource planning, as well as a $25,000 grant for shoreline restoration.

“We would like to thank the Department of Administration and Secretary Brennan for recognizing the City of Sheboygan for our efforts,” said Mayor Sorenson. “Our water resources are a treasure, and we know just how important they are for recreation and for our community. Sheboygan will continue to embrace our water resources and will work had to preserve them for future generations to enjoy as well.”

Secretary Brennan and Mayor Sorenson were joined by representatives from the Bay-Lake RPC and other local officials. The Bay-Lake RPC has received a $20,000 grant for technical assistance.

“The Commission would like to thank the Wisconsin Department of Administration and the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program for funding the annual Technical Assistance grant,” said Brandon Robinson, Assistant Director for Bay-Lake RPC. “The funds will allow the Commission to continue with its coastal-related planning efforts and address challenges facing coastal communities and counties located along the Bay-Lake region’s 400 miles of Lake Michigan and Green Bay coastline. The Commission would also like to extend its appreciation for the longstanding support provided by the Wisconsin Coastal Management Council and program staff on previous and ongoing regional coastal management projects.

The three WCMP grants commemorated today were part of the most recent round of 40 grants awarded by Governor Tony Evers, totaling $1.4 million dollars to protect and improve the Great Lakes resources across Wisconsin’s coastal communities.
