Happy Winter, fellow nurses! By the time this newsletter is published, we will be almost through this favorite season we all love and look forward to. I want to share a couple of things that the board has been working on, the first being: delegation. What is delegation, what are delegated acts, and who may delegate? The Board of Nursing has been busy over the last year discussing and researching possible updates to the Nurse Practice Act
Second, as we all know, our nursing workforce is still facing a shortage. With that comes the uncertainty of not having enough caregivers to meet the needs of our patients. One area addressing this issue is with medication aides. Some of you may already work with medication aides as the training has been approved for some time by DHS. This training prepares non-licensed individuals to safely and properly pass medications in certain settings. So, what does all of this mean for us? We continue to see drastic changes to our work force including a decreasing number of both RNs and LPNs. This continued shortage is forcing organizations to get creative and think outside the box to ensure they are able to deliver safe and appropriate care to their patients, whatever population that may be.
The past several years, healthcare organizations and leaders have had to continually pivot, and these potential changes are no different. We must also keep on the forefront of our minds what strategy(ies) should be implemented to retain those currently comprising the Nursing profession to prevent any further losses in our workforce. I am back to beating this drum: Recruitment and Retention are paramount.
I attended the latest NCSBN meeting and saw a slide that presented data from Martin, 2023, that startled me: “by the year 2027, 800,000 nurses will have left the work force.” Martin, goes on to show an even more alarming issue is that a great number of those leaving the Nursing profession are 10 years or less into their career. Of those leaving the workforce, the following were cited as the reason(s) for their decision to leave the profession: 62% reported a disproportionately increased workload, 50% reported being “emotionally drained”, and 49% reported experiencing extreme professional fatigue/burnout (Martin, 2023).
As the nursing profession continues to focus on nursing retention, we, as professionals, have to be proactive in recruiting potential nurses by not only getting out there and talking to high school students and participating in local college job fairs, but also placing a high level of focus and importance on creating a welcoming and inclusive environment within your professional settings. Be proactive, volunteer to attend career fairs, speak at local colleges, and whenever possible, put a good word in for nursing. Be Positive!
In closing, a few reminders:
Please see the piece on renewing your license. Changes have been made to the system, please take the time to walk through and familiarize yourself with the changes. Also, if you have not logged into your “old” email for a bit, now is the time.
Review of N7 and frequent issues:
A reminder, once a judgement of conviction has been ordered, whether for a felony or a misdemeanor, the Nurse has 48 hours to notify the Board of the conviction.
Just a FYI for those that will be renewing their license soon: an applicant who has been terminated from any employment related to nursing within the 10 years immediately preceding the date of application shall provide the Board with all related information necessary to determine current competency.

Amanda Kane APRN, FNP-C, ENP-C.
Amanda Kane is honored to be appointed to the Board of Nursing by Governor Tony Evers and looks forward to collaborating with the board on issues including practice standards, nursing retention and recruitment. She is a Board Certified Family and Emergency Nurse Practitioner, currently employed through Madison Emergency Physicians. A graduate of Fox Valley Technical College, UW-Green Bay and Concordia University, she currently practices as a Nurse Practitioner in the Emergency Department through SSM Agnesian in Fond du Lac. With 20 years experience as an RN and seven years as a Nurse Practitioner, her background includes emergency care, sexual assault nurse examiner, nursing education and advocacy. She has served as past president of the Wisconsin International Association of Forensic Nurses and as a state delegate and government affairs chair for the Wisconsin Emergency Nurses Association. She is the recipient of the 2010 Wisconsin Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing Practice. Born and raised in Wisconsin, she currently resides in Oshkosh. Amanda enjoys travel, spending time outdoors, kayaking, gardening and enjoying the sunshine.

Jennifer Malak, R.N.
Jenny Malak is a registered nurse with nearly 20 years of experience. She currently serves as vice president of customer access at Agrace. In this role she oversees Agrace’s Access, Triage, Patient and Guest Services, After-hours Hospice Homecare Operations, and Chronic Specialty care teams, ensuring a smooth referral experience and access to Agrace’s continuum of care.
Jenny is certified in hospice and palliative nursing. She has held positions as a hospital staff nurse at University of Wisconsin Hospital, and an ambulatory care charge nurse at SSM Health (formerly Dean Clinic). Her prior roles with Agrace include hospice nurse case manager, clinical team manager, director of access, and vice president of home care operations. She received her associate degree in nursing from Gogebic Community College in Ironwood, Michigan, her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and her master’s degree in nursing leadership from the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay.
Jenny serves on several local and national committees, including the National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation’s (NPHI) Chief Clinical Officer/Chief Operations Officer forum, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) quality and standards committee, the Wisconsin Organization of Nurse Leaders’ new membership committee and the Wisconsin Nurses Association Workforce Advocacy Council.

Shelly Sabourin, DNP, MPS, BSN, RN
Dr. Sabourin is the Sr. Director of Administration at Aurora Health Care with oversight of the Sheboygan market serving the needs of the communities with a focus on access to primary and specialty care services.
Shelly brings a wealth of healthcare, clinical, and operational knowledge to the Board of Nursing. She has been a nurse for over seventeen years and a fierce advocate and ally for underserved and underrepresented populations. Shelly’s commitment to compassionate and servant leadership has been demonstrated throughout her career in driving high quality metric goal performance and achieving high patient satisfaction and staff engagement. Dr. Sabourin’s operations work leading Covid-19 vaccination programming was co-authored and published in the NEJM Catalyst in 2021, “Doing More With Less: Running a High-Volume Covid-19 Vaccination Site.”
Shelly was born and raised in Baraboo, WI and now resides in Glendale with her husband Clay, who is originally from the area. Both are nurses and have five adult children and two grandchildren. Shelly is a graduate of Madison College-Reedsburg Campus, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Fort Hayes State University and Aspen University. Shelly is a member of a number of professional organizations which include the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing, American College of Healthcare Executives, Group Practice Improvement Network and the National Society of Leadership and Success.
Shelly has many hobbies such as triathlon, running and health and wellness; but more so she loves to create in the kitchen and host guests from around the world. She also loves to travel the world and meet new people and learn about others, their food, cultures, and ways of building relationships.

Patrick McNally, SN, MA, RN, NE-BC, CPPD, CSSGB
Patrick McNally been a registered nurse for over 19 years and currently serves as the Executive Director of Emergency Services for Froedtert Health. He has worked clinically as a critical care nurse and have been in leadership roles since 2010.Patrick also served in the Navy Reserve for ten years.
He has been active with numerous nursing professional organizations and held board positions with the Wisconsin Nurses Association, Greater Milwaukee Area Chapter of Critical Care Nurses, and Sigma Theta Tau-Delta Gamma Chapter.
Patrick resides in Elm Grove, Wisconsin, with his wife and two children.
Patrick commented, "I am excited to have the opportunity to serve on the Wisconsin Board of Nursing. I look forward to supporting the nursing profession in this role."

Do you have a change of name or address?
Licensees can update name or address information on the DSPS self-serve webpage. Please note that confirmation of change is not automatically provided.
Legal notices will be sent to a licensee’s address of record with the Department. Under s. 440.01(1), Wis. Stats., an applicant or credential holder has 30 days to provide notification of a change in name or address. Similarly, under s. 440.11(1m)(a), Wis. Stats. an applicant for or recipient of a credential who changes his or her electronic mail address or whose current electronic mail address becomes inactive shall notify the department of such a change within 30 days of the change.
