Wisconsin Controlled Substances Board Schedules Acryl Fentanyl
Department of Safety and Professional Services Continues to Fight Drug Abuse
Madison, WI – Today, the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) announced the emergency rule to schedule Acryl Fentanyl is now in effect. An analog of fentanyl, Acryl Fentanyl was scheduled by the Controlled Substances Board (CSB) as a Schedule I drug.
“The Department of Safety and Professional Services is committed to combating illicit drugs and keeping Wisconsinites safe,” said Laura Gutiérrez, DSPS Secretary. “This quick action by the Controlled Substances Board is to be commended, as this dangerous drug can cause imminent harm to those who use it.”
Acryl Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is more potent than morphine and heroin and caused a known 12 overdose deaths within three weeks in Milwaukee County in early 2017. The drug is substantially similar to fentanyl but with a slightly different chemical makeup.
“The Board continues to be dedicated in scheduling harmful controlled substances and ensuring that we take steps forward in keeping illicit drugs out of our communities,” said CSB Board Chair Doug Englebert.
Housed under DSPS, the CSB is capable of scheduling a controlled substance analog per § 961.11. Wis. Stats as long as the CSB finds that scheduling of the substance on an emergency basis is necessary to avoid an imminent hazard to the public safety.
