Transcript Reminders: Do not Disclose Disability Status
This is a reminder as you begin the new school year related to transcripts. Unlike report cards, transcripts may not disclose a student’s disability status. Transcripts differ from report cards in that report cards are shared exclusively with the parents, while transcripts are intended to inform potential employers, postsecondary institutions, and other entities, about a student's academic credentials and achievement. Consequently, because a transcript may be publicly shared, school districts cannot disclose a student’s disability status on a transcript. Letter to Runkel, 25 IDELR 387 (OCR 1996); In re: Report Cards and Transcripts for Students with Disabilitieseport Cards and Transcripts for Students with Disabilities, 51 IDELR 50 (OCR 2008). For example, a school district may not place an asterisk or other marker next to courses on high school transcripts to indicate a modified curriculum if use of the marker only applies to students with disabilities. Use of the asterisk or other marker must be used for both students with and without disabilities. Likewise, the name of the course on a high school transcript cannot suggest it is a class only for students with disabilities. Letter to Runkel, 25 IDELR 387 (OCR 1996). The key consideration is whether a designation on a transcription, whether it be a course name or some other marker, overtly or inadvertently discloses the disability status of the student. If it does, then it is impermissible and cannot be included on the transcript.
Annual Required Updates in School Directory
As a reminder, schools are required to update their information at the beginning of every school year. These updates ensure that DPI has accurate information about Wisconsin schools. DPI requires these updates from all LEAs that submit to WISEdata (e.g., public districts and charter schools, private Choice schools) If schools do not make these updates, it can result in validation messages and lack of effective communication.
At the beginning of the year, you can log into WISEhome, click “school directory” and click “home page” to update this information at the beginning of the school year. If changes are needed to your school directory any other time of the year, you must have the “directory update” role in DPI’s School Directory Management Portal. If you do not have this user role assigned to you, please request the user role in WISEhome. Visit the User Guide landing page for your agency type to help you navigate the School Directory Management application to complete your required tasks. For more information about making updates to the school directory management portal, visit the school directory management webpage.
