At the same time, Wisconsin continues to see persistent racial achievement gaps in mathematics. The DPI is in the midst of developing a statewide mathematics plan grounded in national research and evidence-based practices. This plan will provide concrete guidance for schools and districts on impactful mathematics instruction, leaning on the amazing contributions of Wisconsin’s educators and also bringing us together in even more effective partnerships.

Math Legislation
On November 3rd, legislators introduced Assembly bill AB-615 which involves mathematics assessment, achievement, and instruction. A hearing was held by the Assembly Education Committee on Nov 6th. WI DPI provided written testimony in opposition of the bill. That same day legislators introduced the companion bill SB-616. Archived video of the Assembly hearing is available on WisconsinEye after creating a free account. No further movement has occurred with either of these bills as of the publishing of this newsletter.
The DPI statewide message at this time is that Wisconsin educators should continue doing the important work that is already happening in progressing toward greater access and stronger mathematics achievement for all students. There is no need to pause effective or promising work.

Leveraging Multicultural Literature to Support Mathematics
Explore how multicultural children’s literature for elementary classrooms can be leveraged to develop students’ mathematical understanding and foster positive math identities, particularly for multilingual learners. Leveraging Children’s Multicultural Literature to Support Students’ Math Identity and Problem Solving can be found starting on page 43 of Teaching For Excellence and Equity in Mathematics, Vol. 16, No. 1, 2025, a TODOS Mathematics for ALL publication and an affiliate organization of NCTM. Drawing from classroom practice and supported by research, the authors advocate for the use of multicultural texts to provide meaningful opportunities for students to connect their lived experiences to mathematical ideas, empowering them to see themselves as capable mathematicians. Go to page 51 of the article for a table of multicultural texts that can be used as a starting point.
