Math Legislation Introduced in WI

On November 3rd, legislators introduced AB-615. This bill names potential requirements for DPI, public school boards, and independent charter schools related to mathematics education. DPI is currently forming its response which will be shared publicly once available. As a reminder, if you have any thoughts or opinions about this legislation, contact those who authored or co-sponsored the bill in addition to your local WI legislators to make your opinions known. Unlocking the Potential of Multilingual Learners

Did you know that the “WI” in WIDA originally stood for Wisconsin as one of three founding states (along with Delaware and Arkansas) in a consortium that created standards and assessments for English language learners? Today WIDA consists of more than 40 states and continues to provide language development resources to those who support the academic success of multilingual learners. 

Join Developing Language for Learning in Mathematics, a self-paced workshop, and integrate your mathematics instruction with language development. Participants will see and have opportunities to plan ways to support multilingual learners in becoming increasingly effective as they use language to express their own ideas and co-construct ideas with others. This FREE online learning is available through 8/31/26. The time to complete the workshop is approximately four hours.

Boosting Engagement, Confidence, and Understanding in Math

Does my answer make sense? This amount seems too high/low. As math educators, we encourage our students to reconsider their answer when needed as they make sense of problems and persevere in solving them (Standards for Mathematical Practice 1), but that reflection only becomes a valuable learning opportunity when teachers create a positive culture around mistakes. Positioning mistakes as opportunities for growth and learning and even as a contribution to classroom  understanding can support students in seeing mistakes as a natural part of learning mathematics.

This recent edutopia article, written by Wisconsin educator Kathy Collier, takes a look at how examining mistakes can give students a chance to discuss their thinking openly and find new approaches to solving problems. The article also provides practical teacher moves that facilitate learning around mistakes.

Want Students to Gain Math Confidence? Celebrate Their Mistakes, a recent Education Week article, explores six ways teachers can use student errors to deepen understanding and experience the “wind” that helps them grow strong in mathematical thinking, preparing them to stand in the face of the complex problems of the real world.

Data Science 4 Everyone (DS4E) District Grant Opportunity

DS4E is launching a K12 Data Partners Program, a new grant-funded pilot program designed to support K-12 districts in building and expanding high-quality data science education. Through this initiative selected districts will be matched with project managers to provide support through the 25-26 school year. The manager will work with a district team to plan, launch, and strengthen data science initiatives through activities like strategic planning, building engagement, coaching and resource navigation. Wisconsin Mathematics Education Foundation (WMEF), the foundation of WMC, provides grants for professional development opportunities to support high quality, rigorous mathematics instruction in classrooms in Wisconsin.
