Designing Learning Environments to Build Strong Math Identities
As the new school year approaches many math educators are planning ways to engage their students in deep mathematical exploration in order to build a strong math identity. As a resource, here is a 15 minute video containing some serious Ah-ha moments that can support the Shift of Identity as part of the Wisconsin Standards for Mathematics! In the video Leisl McConchie talks about how the brain naturally learns and how educators can intentionally plan for maintaining high expectations and promoting productive struggle while honoring how brain systems respond to educational systems.

Partnering with Families
Families and caregivers are critical partners in math teaching and learning. How will you partner with families as the new school year begins? Check out Development and Research in Early Math Education (DREME) Family Math resources for activities where math can be found in everyday moments, ways to build positive math attitudes, ways to uncover children’s math thinking, and more! Also go to bedtimemath.org to find a family resource that can make math a fun part of kids’ everyday lives and become a routine as beloved as a bedtime story.

WISELearn STEAM Resources
A number of new Wisconsin educator created resources have recently been added to the WISELearn STEAM Education Group. The 2024-2025 cohort of STEAM Fellows from across the state engaged in professional learning, collaborated with regional and statewide partners, and implemented STEAM-related initiatives in their schools and communities. The STEAM fellows have now shared tools, lesson plans, professional learning slides, and other resources to foster innovation, equity, and excellence in PK-12 STEAM education across Wisconsin.

PAEMST Has Paused
Since 1983 the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has provided coordination of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program at the state level. On July 18, 2025, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that it will pause the PAEMST program until further notice. NSF administers this program on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Go to https://www.nsf.gov/honorary-awards/paemst for more information about this decision.
