African American women survivors of intimate partner violence at the intersection of healthcare and law enforcement: A qualitative pilot study
Join Kaylen Moore, Forensic Nurse and Ph.D. Student, as she shares the findings of her qualitative study on African American IPV survivors' experiences with law enforcement and healthcare.

Session Objectives:
- Gain an understanding regarding the connection between historical trauma and the increased prevalence of intimate partner violence in the African American community.
- Gain an understanding regarding the increased prevalence, severity and lethality associated with intimate partner violence among African American women.
- Gan an understanding regarding the feasibility of conducting a research study examining how African American women seek help from healthcare and law enforcement after experiencing intimate partner violence.
- Apply the study's findings to the improvement of education and practice of healthcare and law enforcement professionals.
About the Presenter
Kaylen M. Moore BSN, RN, CCRN, SANE-A, SANE-P has been practicing as a Registered Nurse for 19 years, caring for patients in the specialty areas of internal medicine, critical care, and perioperative care. Kaylen also has nine years of experience as a Forensic Nurse Examiner, caring for survivors and perpetrators of violent crimes. This experience informs her current research as a Ph.D. student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, which examines how African American women navigate the intersecting healthcare and law enforcement systems after experiencing intimate partner violence. In addition, Kaylen contributes to improving nursing practice and trauma-informed care of survivors as a professional mentor to BSN students and new Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Other contributions include her authorship of publications such as chapters in the book IAFN Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Certification: A Review for the SANE-A® and SANE-P®.
