Looking to get outdoors, learn more about state natural areas and contribute to helping them thrive? Join us for an upcoming workday!
No skills are needed as you will be trained onsite.
ROCKY RUN OAK SAVANNA | Saturday, March 19 | 9 a.m – Noon
Get some fresh air and exercise while helping remove invasive brush and cedar trees at Rocky Run Oak Savanna State Natural Area. Rocky Run has native sand prairie and savanna areas that have been taken over by invasive brush. These areas are important habitat for rare plants and animals. We’ll remove the invasives through cutting and burning, and spread seeds of natives collected on-site.
Get directions to the meetup location. Please note this is not a public access.
For questions or to RSVP, contact Jared Urban at jared.urban@wisconsin.gov or 608-228-4349. RSVP is preferred. Let Jared know that you’re attending and we’ll mark you down as a volunteer.
YORK PRAIRIE | Saturday, March 19 | 9 a.m – Noon
Enjoy the beauty of the three units of York Prairie State Natural Area and help take care of them. In the winter we’ll be focused on invasive brush removal and pile burning if there is snow. We’ll plant seeds we collected in the fall in areas we clear to heal the prairie. We will meet on the third Saturday of the month. This is a great way to get outside with others in the winter.
Access directions to the meetup location.
For questions, contact Heidi Hankley at 608-438-3911. RSVP is not required.

Help us care for State Natural Areas, some of Wisconsin's most pristine public lands. Encourage native plants and animals to thrive by cutting brush, controlling invasive species, collecting seeds, monitoring rare species and preparing fire breaks. Show up for a workday or become a steward responsible for all volunteer activities at a State Natural Area. Any level of participation is encouraged and no experience is necessary to start volunteering.
More information on meeting locations, how to RSVP, and contact info is available on the DNR website.
