SUBJECT: Death Notice


1. We announce with sympathy the death of BG (Retired) Barry W. Young on Saturday, July 19, 2014.


2. Brigadier General Barry Young was born on September 23, 1931, and began his military career on January 17, 1951, when he enlisted in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. In 1953 he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant within the 32d Separate Infantry Brigade (Mechanized). He was promoted to First Lieutenant in 1953, to Captain in 1959, and was mobilized to active federal service during the Berlin Crisis with duty at Fort Lewis, Washington, from October 24, 1961, to August 10, 1962. Captain Young was then promoted to Major in 1965 and to Lieutenant Colonel in 1972 serving in a variety of staff assignments of increasing responsibility within the 32d, including as a battalion commander. Lieutenant Colonel Young transferred to state headquarters in 1978 and was subsequently promoted to Colonel, serving as Operations Officer and then as Chief of Staff. On August 2, 1981, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and served as the Deputy Adjutant General of the Wisconsin Army National Guard until his retirement in 1987 with over 36 years of service to state and nation.


3. Brigadier General Young’s military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Gold Hourglass, the WI National Guard Service Ribbon (third award), and the WI National Guard Berlin Crisis Ribbon.


4. Visitation will be at Winn-Cress Funeral Home, 5785 Hwy Q, Waunakee, WI, on Thursday, August 7, 2014, beginning at 1600 hours until 1900 hours and also on Friday, August 8, 2014, from 1000 hours until 1100 hours at Peace Lutheran Church, 701 S. Century Avenue, Waunakee, WI. The church services will be held at 1100. Military Honors will follow the service at the church. Burial will take place at Highland Memorial Gardens, 3054 Cottage Grove Road, Cottage Grove, WI at 1430.


5. Brigadier General Young is survived by his sons James and Bill Young, his daughter Cindy Morris, and their families.
