OPPA: Public Health Infrastructure (PHI) Grant Funds to Support Accreditation Readiness for Local and Tribal Health Departments
This message is being sent to local public health officers, Tribal health directors, and key DPH staff.
Results from the Accreditation Funding Support Interest Survey
On November 18, a message from the PHI Grant team went out to local and Tribal health departments (LTHDs) to survey interest in accreditation funding support. We received 65 responses! Here are the results:
- Fifty LTHDs are interested in taking their next steps toward maintaining or achieving accreditation status. This represents 53% of LTHDs overall in Wisconsin.
- Of the 50 LTHDs that expressed interest, 33 are not accredited, nine are accredited, and eight are reaccredited.
- Thirty-three LTHDs that aren’t accredited expressed interest in accreditation. This represents 43% of all not accredited LTHDs in Wisconsin.
Next steps for interested LTHDs
Staff from the Office of Policy Practice Alignment (OPPA) are actively working to establish a contract with the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). The contract will allow for LTHDs fees from PHAB be paid directly by the Division of Public Health’s PHI Grant.

The total cost of fees budgeted for PHAB is $270,056. In addition to covering fees, this contract will also include funding for technical assistance and support from PHAB for participating LTHDs. The technical assistance and support will begin with starting a statewide accreditation learning community. The learning community will offer shared learning opportunities and peer connection across all interested LTHDs in Wisconsin.
Communication from PHAB
The PHI Grant team has asked that PHAB reach out to all LTHDs that expressed interest in pursuing or maintaining accreditation status. If your agency expressed interest, you should see an email from PHAB (askphab@phaboard.org) in the coming weeks. If you are not sure whether or how your agency responded to the interest survey late last year, reach out to the PHI Grant team (DHSDPHPHIGrant@dhs.wisconsin.gov).
