Introduction to Criteria Highlights

These highlights are intended to provide clarification to frequently asked questions or recently cited deficiencies. These criteria highlights are applicable to Wisconsin Department of Health Services classified level III and level IV trauma care facilities. Criteria 8(e): 

Applicable to level III and IV facilities, type 1 deficiency

Criteria: For all neurosurgical cases, whether patients are admitted or transferred, care must be timely and appropriate.

Education and clarification: Trauma care facility (TCF) can demonstrate timely and appropriate care for all neurosurgical cases according to best practice guidelines, this includes having a facility define guideline or protocol referencing which neurosurgical cases shall remain at the facility and which shall be transferred to a higher level of care. Neurosurgical cases are reviewed by performance improvement and patient safety (PIPS) process. Delays in care or inappropriate care are reviewed within the PIPS process as evidenced by meeting minutes.
