Criteria 8(c):

Applicable to level III and IV facilities, type 2 deficiency

Criteria: The trauma care facility (TCF) must have a written policy or guideline approved by the trauma medical director (TMD) that defines which types of patients require a response by neurosurgery and which type of neurosurgical injuries may remain at the TCF and which should be transferred.

Education and clarification: All trauma care facilities, regardless of neurosurgical capabilities, should have a written policy or guideline approved by the TMD that defines which types of neuro-trauma injuries may remain at the facility and which should be transferred. This guideline or policy can include comfort care, observations, and any other patients that may remain. These patients should be reviewed through your trauma performance improvement and patient safety (PIPS) process.
