The Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association (WPVGA) used export expansion grant funds to begin exploring exporting options and developing relationships in Canadian and Mexican markets. Contacts have now been made with over 50 individuals/buyers.
Attendance at the Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) show in April of 2023 in Toronto and again in Vancouver in 2024 led to valuable contacts with multiple interested parties for the several Wisconsin shippers who participated. Our industry is committed to expanding these export opportunities as we plan to attend CPMA in 2025. Wisconsin hosted a Reverse Trade Mission for Canadian potato industry representatives in April 2024, which established the foundation for quality relationships and future sales opportunities.
One potato shipper reported increased export sales to Mexico from $100,000 in crop year 2022-23 to $917,000 in 2023-24. Another shipper reported increased sales volume by nearly 15% in the first five months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023 and hired an individual to handle sales to Canada.

The WIAE is a collaborative project between DATCP and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) that aims to boost the export of dairy, meat, and crop products by promoting Wisconsin agricultural products in the international marketplace. WIAE was proposed in Gov. Tony Evers' 2021-23 biennial state budget.
