On August 8, 2024, DATCP participated in the annual Ginseng Field Days. August 17-21, 2024, DATCP and U.S. Livestock and Genetics Export (USLGE) staff participated in the USDA Agricultural Trade Mission to Bogota, Colombia, led by U.S. Undersecretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Alexis Taylor. One-on-one meetings with buyers facilitated learning about the growing consumer market, and USLGE hosted seminars and a farm tour in support of Wisconsin's bovine genetics exports. In 2023, U.S. agricultural exports to Colombia reached a record $3.7 billion. Colombia ranks as the seventh-largest market for U.S. agricultural exports, while the United States is the top export market for Colombia's agricultural products. Colombia is Wisconsin's 25th largest export market, totaling $17.5 million dollars. A growing number of middle-class households means consumers are increasingly interested in packaged and prepared foods, while substantial regulatory changes in packaging and taxes on products high in sugar, salt, and saturated fats are helping drive demand for healthy foods.

September 15-18, 2024, DATCP participated in Americas Food and Beverage Show in Miami, Florida, hosted by the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA). Five associations exhibited in the DATCP booth—Wisconsin Beef Council, Wisconsin Cranberry Growers Association, Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin, Ginseng Board of Wisconsin, and Wisconsin Potatoes—promoting the diversity of Wisconsin agriculture to the Latin American and Caribbean markets and netting 60+ export leads. Wisconsin companies also participated in 23 one-on-one buyer meetings, all creating strong leads for ready-to-order buyers. There were over 10,000 attendees, 700 companies, 900 stands, and 20 international pavilions at the show.
In September 2023, DATCP completed a trade mission to Algeria coordinated by the USDA Foreign Agriculture Service and the National Association of Animal Breeders/Certified Semen Services (NAAB/CSS). The Wisconsin Initiative for Agricultural Exports (WIAE) Export Expansion Grant funded the participation of Dr. Ryan Breuer and Dr. Keith Poulsen from the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. This mission was the first of its kind combining relationship building, education and product use training, and government advocacy/diplomacy, and was highly successful in four areas:
- A significant milestone was the approval and signing of the export health certificate for U.S. bovine germplasm (semen and embryos) with the U.S. Ambassador to Algeria and Algeria’s Chief Veterinary Officer.
- DATCP participated in farm and industry visits to build relationships with regulatory agencies and potential buyers. This included conversations with the Centre National de Insemination Artificelle ed de Amelioration Genetique (CNIAAG), the national artificial insemination regulatory agency that is a critical component in quality control and distribution of imported germplasm.
- Training and panels were held on animal health, infectious disease, best practices for genetic selection, and quality control. This included hands-on training on the farm, focused on nutrition, calf health, advanced reproduction techniques, and cow comfort.
- NAAB/CSS returned to Algiers in November to continue negotiations with CNIAAG as their demand for dairy grows.
*The Wisconsin Initiative for Agricultural Exports (WIAE), a collaborative project between DATCP and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), aims to boost the export of dairy, meat, and crop products by promoting Wisconsin agricultural products in the international marketplace. WIAE was proposed in Gov. Tony Evers' 2021-23 biennial state budget.
