Attention poultry owners:
In the past weeks, there have been six cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in backyard domestic and commercial flocks in the state.
As wild bird migration continues this fall and winter, additional cases may be detected in the state. DATCP urges all poultry owners to be proactive to protect their birds from the disease. Please take time to review and ensure that everyone who has contact with your poultry are following biosecurity practices to reduce risks to your birds.
In an effort to help producers determine if their poultry are located in an active control area or surveillance zone, DATCP has launched a new map tool.
HPAI is highly contagious and often fatal to domestic poultry. The disease can be spread by contact with infected birds, commingling with wild birds or their droppings, equipment, or clothing worn by anyone working with the animals. All Wisconsin poultry owners are encouraged to protect their flock by practicing proper biosecurity.
The mapping tool can be accessed through DATCP's HPAI webpage.
Be sure to monitor flocks for any changes in behavior and call (608) 224-4872 to report any birds that may appear sick or that have recently died.
DATCP also reminds Wisconsin poultry owners to register their premises. State law requires that all livestock owners register where their animals are kept. Registration helps animal health officials communicate with flock owners during disease outbreaks.
