In August, Dr. Luis Enrique Santana, an Economic Development Consultant at DATCP's International Agribusiness Center, attended the most important dairy show in Brazil–Agroleite. The purpose of Santana's trip was to evaluate this important market and get to explore firsthand opportunities in Brazil for Wisconsin genetics companies and dairy cattle breeders.
Brazil is the most populous nation in Latin America with nearly 214 million people and it is the world’s sixth-largest milk producer, having a five percent share (32.9 million metric tons) of global production. Brazil is not only one of the biggest producers of milk, but it's also one of the biggest consumers, presenting opportunities for Wisconsin producers.
More than a dozen international chefs and media influencers from nine countries were invited for a first-hand look at, and taste of Wisconsin’s food and crops from August 11-20, 2023. Stops included Madison, Milwaukee, Kohler, Sheboygan, Green Bay, Mauston, Viroqua, La Crosse, and Minneapolis. This initiative of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA FAS) was organized and supported by DATCP and many sponsors. The group was introduced to Wisconsin’s rich food culture. Visits included: restaurants with chef-to-chef experiences, farmers market, cheese plant, vegetable farm, and meeting with Oneida Nation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Deputy Secretary Xochitl Torres Small will lead the first-ever U.S. agribusiness trade mission to Luanda, Angola from November 28 to December 1. USDA Foreign Agricultural Service is now accepting applications from U.S. exporters who wish to participate in this trade mission.
While in Angola, participants will conduct business-to-business meetings with potential buyers, receive in-depth market briefings from FAS and industry trade experts, and participate in site visits and other networking opportunities. In addition to meeting with importers in Angola, U.S. participants will also meet with buyers from neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo.
With a population of nearly 36 million people, many of whom are middle- and high-income consumers, Angola is looking for high-quality imported products. In 2022, U.S. food and agriculture exports to Angola totaled $236.8 million, making it the seventh largest African market for U.S. exporters. Consumer-oriented products accounted for more than 99 percent of U.S. agricultural and food exports to Angola in 2022. Angola was the largest U.S. poultry market in Africa, and the sixth largest globally last year, importing more than $232 million of American poultry and poultry products.
The Angolan market presents strong export opportunities including poultry, pulses and dry beans, wheat, and wine. Local and U.S. industry partners also see opportunities for other products, including rice, soy, and vegetable oils, and other consumer-oriented products, including beef, pork, sauces and condiments, and distilled spirits.

Agricultural product companies, from processed foods, grains, and mink pelts to livestock, genetics, and more, are encouraged to participate. Funding from the Wisconsin Initiative for Agricultural Exports* supports the agricultural producers and WEDC supports agricultural processors in this beneficial program.

The survey of dairy processors will help us to understand the barriers facing dairy product exporters, in order to better tailor our programs. We have received responses from about 10 percent of processors. We are in need of participation from those who are not exporting. Please consider participating if you are a dairy processor, whether or not you export.
From UW-Madison Associate Professor Dr. Charles (Chuck) Nicholson:
With support of the UW-Madison Dairy Innovation Hub and the Wisconsin Initiative for Agricultural Exports, we are conducting a research study on the current degree of participation by Wisconsin dairy companies and the most important barriers to entering or expanding presence in dairy export markets. We are also looking for non-exporting dairy processors. To address these issues, we have developed an online survey with questions about your company's current involvement — or lack thereof — in dairy product export markets and the opportunities and challenges associated with it. Sharing your company’s experience with dairy export markets, or your concerns about beginning exports, will provide helpful information to the development of future programs to support expansion of Wisconsin's dairy product exports.
We estimate that this survey should take 10-20 minutes to complete. All information provided will be held in the strictest confidence and will not be made available or reported to any individual or organization other than the researchers, Dr. Chuck Nicholson, and Dr. Mark Stephenson of UW-Madison. No individual company data will be reported in any form, only aggregated survey results. If you have questions or concerns regarding the survey, we are happy to discuss them.
Thank you for your assistance with this research effort.
