Update No. 8: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Jefferson County

Depopulation efforts were completed today at the Jefferson County poultry farm infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), in coordination with its local, state and federal partners, has begun compost disposal at a nearby site.

Composting is the safest and most effective way to handle large volumes of carcasses. DATCP’s frequently asked questions addresses composting and the disposal process, and the FAQs were recently updated to address questions on drinking water and groundwater.

Anyone with additional questions can contact our avian influenza response line at (608) 224-4902. Messages are monitored daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Please keep watching DATCP’s HPAI in Wisconsin webpage for the latest resources and updates. Here are a few resources to protect your poultry flocks and learn more about HPAI.
