Increasing Biosecurity to Protect Poultry Against HPAI
The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed highly pathogenic Eurasian H5N1 avian influenza (HPAI) in wild birds in South Carolina and North Carolina. Eurasian H5N1 HPAI has not been detected in a wild bird in the United States since 2016.
While there have been no detections on U.S. farms, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) recommends that all Wisconsin poultry producers increase their biosecurity measures. The USDA’s Defend the Flock program offers several resources, including guidance on how to best protect your poultry. Additional resources, fact sheets and a biosecurity checklist can be found at DATCP's avian influenza page.
The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) offers testing for HPAI. For more information or to contact the WVDL, visit www.wvdl.wisc.edu.
