Summer Season and Cyanuric Acid

Many outdoor pool operators use chlorine disinfectants that have added cyanuric acid, such as Trichlor and Diochlor. Cyanuric acid is a chlorine stabilizer and reduces evaporation of chlorine in pools by limiting the effect of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. However, cyanuric acid can build up on pool & spa walls. With buildup comes higher CYA concentrations,
which lower chlorine’s effectiveness. Here are some tips for managing CYA:

• Do not use cyanuric acid in indoor pools, spas or hot tubs.
• Test cyanuric acid levels on a weekly basis. The ideal level for CYA is 30 – 50ppm.
• The most effective way to reduce CYA is to partially drain the pool and add fresh water.
• Some CYA will cling to the pool tub, plumbing and filtration system so even after completely draining, there might be detectable levels of CYA. Scrub the pool walls to further reduce levels.

Drain Cover Requirements

Drain covers must meet entrapment prevention requirements as specified in the Virginia Graham Baker Act (VGBA). Drain covers must also be regularly inspected for damage and to ensure they are securely attached. If the drain cover is cracked, broken, or not secure, the pool must be closed until it is replaced or repaired. Documentation for each drain cover must be available on site at time of inspection. Documentation for drain covers must include: The date the cover was installed; and Manufacturer information including expiration date.

Disinfectant levels, pH, flow, water clarity and temperature above 95°F, must be checked daily at your facility and recorded in a pool and/or spa log sheet. Weekly tests should include alkalinity and cyanuric acid. Note any corrective actions taken, including amount and type of chemicals added. The log sheet(s) should be used to also note equipment fixes and installs, including drain cover replacements. A more thorough walk-through and check of your facility should happen regularly. Report Injuries!

Pool owners or operators must report any death, near drowning, or serious injury to WCHCS within 48 hours (RCW 70.90 and WAC 246-260).

A serious injury means:

• someone has called for emergency help (such as 911)
• a person needs immediate medical treatment at a clinic or emergency room.   
• a person has been admitted to a hospital
