For the first time in 3 years, Tacoma-Pierce County Opioid Task Force’s annual summit will be an in-person event, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Thursday, March 23 at Pioneer Park Pavilion, 220 S. Meridian, Puyallup.

Creating a system of culture and care in our community is the theme for the 2023 summit. The half-day event features task force committee updates, activities, breakout rooms to discuss creating a culture of care, and discussion about the opioid settlement funds.

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the U.S. Pregnancy is an important time to monitor cardiovascular health.

Black and Indigenous women are especially vulnerable because of the high rates of maternal and infant mortality compared to white women.

If a pregnant person has high blood pressure, it could be a condition called pre-eclampsia. This condition can produce dangerous seizures even after pregnancy.

“Pregnancy acts like a stress test,” says Dr. Uma Krishnan, a board-certified cardiologist with Pulse Heart Institute.
