Working to Keep Tacoma Safe
The safety of Tacoma community members is of paramount concern. I have heard from many of you who are concerned about your safety and unsettled by the recent violence on Pacific Avenue. Our detectives are working tirelessly to bring those responsible for the double homicide into custody, and the Tacoma Police Department will share additional information as appropriate while protecting the integrity of the investigation.
Though this incident is troubling, I also want to take a moment to address the data around crime in Tacoma. Year-to-date, homicides in Tacoma are down 11.1%, alongside decreases in assault, sex offenses, and stolen property. Though one crime is still too many, the data shows that our city’s investment in increasing police staffing is making our community safer. Though we have more work to do, I am encouraged by decreases in criminal activities. You can view weekly crime data in the City Manager’s Weekly Report or on the Tacoma Police Crime Dashboard.
The City of Tacoma and City Council remain committed to supporting the Tacoma Police Department with the resources it needs to keep our community safe. I am grateful for the officers and detectives who work around the clock in service to our residents. I have had the opportunity to ride along with our officers on many occasions, and I have seen firsthand their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to protecting our community. I want to thank every member of the Tacoma Police Department for the work they do each day to keep Tacoma safe.
We will continue working alongside the Tacoma Police Department to support the safety of our neighborhoods and our residents. The police department is deploying high-visibility patrols to deter violence and provide a visible presence in our community. Tacoma is a strong community, and we will continue to stand together against violence.
