For all those riding bikes or those hoping to do so in the future, take a look at our bikeways route maps. Building out our bike lanes and making them safer for everyone has been a top priority of mine since I joined City Council, and I plan to continue to advocate for the robust multimodal transportation that Tacoma needs. I excited to share that many new bike facilities have already come online this year. On Saturday, August 22, we'll be having a family-friend bike ride to celebrate Sheridan Avenue’s new makeover, including safe crossings, extra wide sidewalks, and upgraded bus stops to get families to Wapato Park safely and comfortably. Just meet us at Fern Hill Elementary at noon! Don't forget to also check out WSDOT's E-Bike Rebate Program, which runs until March 2027. 

I am very pleased to share that the City’s new voluntary salvage assessment program is already off to a great start! Significant amounts of quality building components have been salvaged from the very first project, including new kitchen cabinets, doors, windows, plumbing fixtures, fencing, kitchen appliances, furnace, and a water heater. All these items would have previously been lost to the wrecking ball and thrown away. This program is a result of the City Council’s direction to divert more waste—especially demolition and construction debris—from our landfill and increase reuse and recycling.

I recently visited Earthwise Architectural Salvage and Second Use in Tacoma to see all the incredible items they have salvaged—from old growth timber beams to stained glass windows. Some of my favorite items are pictured below. It is so fun to walk around these stores and be inspired by all the wonderful unique items. Many thanks to Aaron, Hopey, and Ben for showing me around!
