Deputy Mayor John Hines - Upcoming Coffee Chat and Walk Across Tacoma
City of Tacoma Washington sent this bulletin at 07/16/2024 12:51 PM PDT
Hello Tacoma!
I hope you all are enjoying this wonderful start to the summer and staying cool! I am excited to share that I am setting off on my 'Walk Across Tacoma' this week. From July 19 to July 25, I'll be walking across the entire city, starting at Point Defiance Park and covering roughly 70 miles over seven days. I have often found that the best way to get to know what is happening is to get out and see it with my own eyes and on my own two feet. I am also excited that some of my colleagues and other community members will be with me for parts of the journey. Can't wait to get out there and start chatting with people I meet!
The goal of the walk is understanding what we can do to address the issues that matter most to our residents and better support the things we love about the City of Destiny. As Deputy Mayor and the District 1 representative, I strive to understand how the City Council’s policy and budget decisions impact our residents’ daily lives. This walk is an opportunity to engage directly with residents who might not have the time to share their perspectives during City Council meetings. By walking alongside our residents, listening to their personal stories, and experiencing their neighborhoods firsthand, I hope to learn more about the local issues that matter to everyone.
Along with hearing from residents, my hope is that the 'Walk Across Tacoma' will highlight the many of the things we love about Tacoma, such as public art, neighborhood businesses, and inviting public spaces. I am looking forward to meeting and walking with many of our residents to ensure their voices are front and center as we continue to improve our community together!
I also want to highlight that I will be hosting a Coffee Chat during the walk on July 20 at Wheelock Library from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. For residents not interested in walking, it will be a great opportunity for some further conversations about our city. I hope some of you will consider joining me then!
If you’d like to join me on the walk, please feel free to reach out via email, and I can send you the details of when and where I will start each day.
After the walk, I look forward to sharing my reflections and what I learned along the way. As someone who grew up in Tacoma and spent my life in neighborhoods across the city, I am eager to connect and reconnect with friends and neighbors from across the city.
Hopefully I will see many of you this week--or out enjoying the great summer events in Tacoma!
