Dear Neighbors,
As a book lover and a former Tacoma Public Library Trustee, I look forward to Tacoma Reads every year. Earlier this month, I joined many of you at the University of Washington Tacoma to hear from this year’s Tacoma Reads author David Ambroz, who wrote A Place Called Home.
The event was very powerful, with a mix of David sharing his experiences with homelessness and the foster care system, and his challenge to our city to help some of the most vulnerable among us. I was deeply moved by his call to action for our country and his words that, “a great country like the United States, that put a man on the moon more than 50 years ago, must and should be able to end homelessness and poverty.”
It was another great event with Tacoma Reads and our Tacoma Public Library!
Hopefully you will join the conversation and read A Place Called Home this year. And better yet, when you get a copy of A Place Called Home at your local library, grab a few copies of some other great books too!
For those of you who are interested in joining the Library Board of Trustees, please remember that applications are due by November 19! The Board oversees the management and operation of the Tacoma Public Library system and is comprised of five members who are nominated by the Mayor and appointed by a majority vote of the City Council. The membership term is five years.
Details are available at cityoftacoma.org/cbcapplication. Questions about the application process, requests for the application in an alternate format, or requests to submit additional documents may be submitted to Elizabeth Wing in the City Clerk’s Office at servetacoma@cityoftacoma.org or (253) 591-5178.
