Welcome our Interim Neighborhood Council Program Coordinator! 

Bucoda Warren, Senior Management Fellow for the City Manager, joined the Neighborhood and Community Services Department on June 24 and will be working for the remainder of the year to support the Neighborhood Council Program. He will be responsible for the following:

  • Publishing the Neighborhood Council Newsletter
  • Developing a Neighborhood Council training program including diversity, equity, and inclusion training
  • Creating a handbook for new board members
  • Engaging Neighborhoods to update language for TMC 1.45 and the standard and guidelines based on past feedback and continuing conversations
  • Evaluating the current innovative grant process to better align with City participatory budgeting strategies
  • Serving as the liaison to the Community Council and        coordinating liaisons across the neighborhood councils

Last month's emerging issues from across multiple neighborhood councils.

Addressing Homelessness Concerns with Tacoma First 311 - The best way to address homelessness concerns is to report them to 311, so the Homeless Outreach Team can be deployed to provide services. Use the link above to submit a concern online, download the app, or call 311 within City limits. You can also follow up on your report by using the Homeless Encampment Mapping Tool

Fireworks are Illegal in Tacoma -  Fireworks are prohibited in the city of Tacoma. There is a $257 fine for violations. Since the fireworks ban went into effect in 1992, there has been a steady drop in violations and reports of fireworks each year. Fireworks are a  fire risk to property in dry conditions, and can cause anxiety for veterans and pets. Report violations to the fireworks hotline at 253-798-4721. 

Grit City Trees Application Open - The City's free street tree giveaway program is now accepting applications for the 2019 season. Applications for individuals are due Tuesday, August 13, and Friday, September 6, for groups. 

Applicants Sought for Board of Building Appeals - The Tacoma City Council is looking to fill three positions on the Board of Building Appeals (BOBA). The positions are each a five-year term, if you are a building owner representative, general contractor or fire department representative apply today.

Join the Tacoma Area Commission on Disabilities - The Tacoma City Council is looking to fill three positions on the Tacoma Area Commission on Disabilities, including two member positions and one youth position, age 16-18.

Apply to the Transportation Commission - The Tacoma City Council is looking to fill two positions on the Transportation Commission in Council Districts 3 and 4, each to serve a three-year term.

TAGRO Facilities Reopen July 8 -  Summer hours are now in effect: Monday - Friday: 8 AM to 5 PM, Saturday: 8 AM to noon, Sunday: CLOSED.

Tacoma Police Citizen's Academy - Interested in strengthening the bond between police and community members? Email Lt. Dan Still at dstill@cityoftacoma.org to participate in the Tacoma Police Department's next Citizen's Academy cohort. Classes meet Wednesdays, Sep 11 - Dec 11 (not 11/27), 6-8:00pm, 3639 S Pine St. 


Upcoming Events and Public Hearings

Coffee with the Mayor - Join Mayor Woodards the next coffee hour from 5 – 6 PM, Thursday, July 18 at Bertolino’s (2421 S. Union Ave). 

Citizen's Forum - The next Citizen's Forum is July 9. Citizen's Forum is an opportunity to speak before Council on any matter the City has jurisdiction over. 

Community Cleanups - The Community Cleanup Program is underway. The next cleanups are July 13 at First Creek Middle School, and July 20 at Mann Elementary. For a full schedule click the link above.

Joint Study Session with Metro Parks Board -  On July 9 the City Council with meet with the Metro Parks Board to talk about future planning efforts for the Heidelberg Sports Complex. You can use the link above to watch live starting at noon.

You Asked for It

Question: Does the interim regulations limit expansion of businesses if there has been a transfer of ownership? (New Tacoma)

Answer: The Tideflat interim regulations extended by the City Council do not limit the expansion of existing businesses regardless of ownership. The interim regulations, as adopted, apply only to new uses. Uses that are existing and are legally established are allowed to continue regardless of ownership. 

Question: How do I sign up for land use notices? (South Tacoma)

Answer: Use the link above to sign up for notices when new permits are issued, when comment periods are open, and when hearings are being held.
