Hilltop Businesses are Open During Construction!

HilltopBD

Light rail construction is in full swing which will be a benefit to us but right now we need to be out there supporting our community business owners who are being impacted by construction. I know I enjoy  frequenting coffee shops and restaurants on the Hilltop, and want to share a few of my favorites with you this month to encourage everyone to visit our community businesses during construction. I hope to see you out there!

Fish House

If you are looking for fresh catfish and hush puppies, look no further than the Fish House Cafe. This land standing no-frills spot is the perfect place to grab some southern cooking on the Hilltop. The food is great and portions generous, just be sure you come early because you may find a line of people waiting to try it themselves. You can grab yourself some fresh fish at 1814 MLK Jr. Way.

Bobs bbq

Bob's Bar-B-Q Pit has been serving Texas Style Barbeque in Tacoma since 1948. Founded by Bob and Elizabeth Littles in 1948, they moved into the Hilltop in 1989. Bob's continues to serve real pit smoked barbecue using recipes past down for generations that makes you want to keep coming back for more. Walking into Bob's is stepping into a historic black business in Tacoma. You can find them and taste for yourself at 911 South 11th street.

Scott Funeral Home and Cremation Services has been serving the Tacoma community since 1967. Since that time they have gone above and beyond to serve the community day or night, and ensure your loved one's wishes are carried out with the utmost respect. You can visit them in person at 1215 MLK Jr. Way.

Smoke Ready Communities Day Raises Awareness

June 19 was smoke ready communities day. Wildfire smoke reduces visibility and creates outdoor air quality issues that can affect people’s health. Women who are pregnant, children and the elderly, and those who have respiratory issues like asthma, COPD, people who smoke, have disabilities, or heart or circulatory problems are more at risk. This day was to raise awareness for the community to prepare before wildfire season hits us.

Washington State has experienced over 300 fires so far in 2019, with half of them occurring in Western Washington. Based on current drought and forest conditions, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources believes we may see a record number of wildfires in 2019. Please watch out for your neighbors who may be adversely affected by smoke, and you have shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, heart palpitations, extreme fatigue or difficulty moving, contact your healthcare provider immediately or call 911.

Grit City Tree Program Accepting Applications

Grit City Trees is the City of Tacoma’s free street tree giveaway program, and applications for the 2019 season are being accepted now through Tuesday, August 13, for individuals and Friday, September 6, for group applications. The goal of the program is to increase tree canopy and beautify neighborhoods through community building by providing free street trees to Tacoma homeowners who are interested in planting in the right-of-way.

Individuals can submit applications; however, residents are encouraged to work with their neighborhoods to apply for trees as a group. Successful neighborhood group applications are eligible to have trees delivered in October. For those with successful individual applications, trees will be available for pick up at the City nursery in the fall.

Interested residents must fill out the Grit City Trees application form and the corresponding tree care agreement must be signed by all participating property owners. These trees are for planting in the right-of-way only and species availability is limited.
