Goodfellas Barbershop celebrates 14 years of business on the
Hilltop this month.
Peace Community Center’s Bill Hanwalt was honored by the White
House last month as a “Champion of Change for Summer Opportunity” for his
leadership in the Center’s summer learning program.
Nativity House on Hilltop is the largest, most
comprehensive facility in the County serving low-income and homeless men and
women. Services are provided year-round and include hot meals, day and
overnight shelter, mental health and chemical dependency assessments and
referrals, rapid re-housing and more. Guests are welcome to come in for day
shelter and other services. Doors open at 7 a.m. For more

Safe Routes to School
When kids can
safely walk, ride bikes and skateboard to school, everyone benefits!
Students that have the opportunity to start and
end their day with physical activity arrive at school ready to learn. When our
kids are able to safely use affordable options to get to school, families save
time and resources.
Unfortunately,
these healthy, fun and affordable ways to get around too often put young
people at risk. Over the past five years, a child has
been hit by a car while walking or bicycling every eight days in the City of
Tacoma. The Hilltop and East Side neighborhoods are
seeing a disproportionate number of these crashes. A
2013 study found that students who attend low-income schools are four times
more likely to walk to school than those attending higher income schools. We
owe it to our kids to improve safety.
Miriam McBride is 18 years old and a senior at Lincoln High
School. She has lived in Northeast Tacoma, the East Side, the South End and
the Hilltop. She says her heart belongs to the Hilltop neighborhood because it
is where she was introduced to people who have supported her, and it is where
she has had the opportunity to grow as a leader.
Miriam began doing community outreach through College Bound and the
Teen Outreach Program. Her community service involves addressing the school to
prison pipeline, youth homelessness and issues surrounding Hilltop's food
desert. She is passionate about giving back to her community and empowering
youth, and is currently a member of the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation's
Youth Philanthropy Board and the president of the women’s division of Young
Business Men and Women. Her involvement in these organizations has given her the platform to inspire her peers to be active in their community.

Transportation Commission to serve a three-year term..

bicycle and pedestrian issues by serving on the Bicycle and Pedestrian
Technical Advisory Group.
The Active
Transportation COI is a community coalition working to ensure that
everyone has access to safe, healthy and affordable active transportation
