FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 10, 2024
Sprague Avenue Construction to Begin in Spokane Valley
Spokane Valley, WA – Construction of the Sprague Avenue Stormwater and Multi-Modal Improvement Project is anticipated to begin June 10. The project is located on westbound Sprague Avenue between N. University Road and N. Herald Road in Spokane Valley.
The project will increase public safety, protect drinking water and provide options and safety for how people choose to travel, whether by car, bus, bike or foot, including connecting the new Balfour Park and Spokane Valley Library with City Hall and the Appleway Trail. Project elements include:
- Stormwater facilities within the existing right-of-way
- Traffic signal improvements
- Pedestrian mid-block signalized crosswalk
- High-performance transit bus stop
- Improved delineated bike lane
- Reduce three blocks of Sprague Avenue from five lanes to three, extending the existing three lanes east of N. University Road west a couple of blocks to N. Herald Road.
Most construction activities will take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., with minimal night and weekend work. The project is expected to be completed in the fall, depending on factors such as favorable weather, construction impacts, or other unforeseen circumstances.
During construction, Sprague Avenue will be reduced to two lanes, and travelers can expect reduced speeds and traffic delays. Side streets and intersections will generally remain open throughout construction. Business access will remain open, and the City encourages community members to continue to support local businesses during construction. Signage will be in place to help direct travel through the construction zone and detours when needed.
The project is funded by a combination of state and federal grants, revenue from the Spokane Transit Authority to fund the bus stop and crosswalk, and city funds dedicated to stormwater and pavement preservation.
