Construction for Stride BRT begins at the Burien Transit Center
Starting Tuesday, Sept. 14, Sound Transit will begin construction of the Stride S1 Line bus island at the Burien Transit Center. Sound Transit will replace the westernmost bus island and shelter (bus bays 1 and 2) with a new bus island for the S1 Stride station. This work will improve the Stride system, connecting communities along I-405 and SR 518 from Bellevue to Burien. Like all Stride routes, buses on the S1 line will run every 10 to 15 minutes, 17+ hours per day, seven days a week. The Stride S1 fleet will consist of double-decker battery-electric buses.
Work will include saw cutting and jackhammering, along with using excavators, vac trucks, dump trucks, concrete mixers, and equipment backup alarms. King County Metro and transit services will continue operations from the center bus island (bus bays 3, 4, 5, and 6). Crews will maintain transit center parking and ADA access. Please follow posted signage for safe access. See map below for more details.
At later dates, Sound Transit will restrict lanes for additional roadwork on SW 148th St between 2nd Ave SW and 4th Ave S to install new bus-only lanes that both Stride and King County Metro buses will use. We will send additional notices after the work is scheduled.
This work is anticipated to continue through 2028, with service starting later that year. For more information and to stay up to date on Stride S1 Line construction and bus services, visit the Stride webpage.
