Project update for the South Tacoma Station Access Improvements
Since the Sound Transit Board approved the Sounder station improvements in 2023, Sound Transit has been designing station improvements to improve access, mobility, and safety for the South Tacoma Sounder station.
Improvements at the station to be completed by Sound Transit will include:
-
New wayfinding and braille signage.
-
Pedestrian crossing improvements at S. 56th Street and S. 60th Street.
-
Tactile warning strips near the edge of the platforms.
-
New, stainless-steel shelters with glass panels at ADA loading platform.
-
New public announcement system.
-
Additional security cameras.
The City of Tacoma has advanced plans to improve bike and shared-use paths, upgrade sidewalks and curb ramps, install new signage, and enhance safety at existing street crossings. Sound Transit will fiscally back these projects, using funds dedicated to support improvements outside the station area.
Community engagement
Later this year, Sound Transit and the city will be back in the community, providing more information about the improvements. Please stay tuned for updates so you can join us and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or comments!
