| Welcome to the winter edition of Sound Transit's CTR newsletter! We've pulled together service- and project-related highlights in one handy place for you to forward to your employees or professional networks.
On Dec. 6, Sound Transit opened three new stations in South King County: Kent Des Moines, Star Lake, and Federal Way Downtown. The 1 Line now serves 26 stations over 41 miles from Federal Way to Lynwood, making it the country's second-longest light rail line, behind only the A line in Los Angeles.
Highline College is a 10-minute walk from Kent Des Moines Station, and Federal Way PAEC is just under 10 minutes from Federal Way Downtown Station.
With trains arriving every eight minutes, passengers can ride from Federal Way to SeaTac airport in just 16 minutes and to downtown Seattle in 50 minutes.
South King County commuters who decide to park and ride can look forward to a 500-space parking garage at Kent Des Moines Station. At Star Lake, there are 1,100 parking spaces in a new garage that replaced surface parking. Federal Way Downtown offers 400 new parking spaces in addition to existing garages.
Sound Transit is thrilled to announce that the Crosslake Connection will open by May 31, 2026, connecting Seattle and east King County communities via the 2 Line across Lake Washington. The first-of-its-kind floating bridge has undergone months of rigorous testing to ensure it can run a safe, fast, and frequent Link service.
2 Line service will operate between Downtown Redmond and Lynwood City Center stations. Two new stations, Judkins Park Station in Seattle and Mercer Island Station, will open to bridge the route from the eastside to Seattle. The 2 Line will share track with the 1 Line in Seattle, between Chinatown/International District Station and Lynwood City Center.
To get to the airport, eastside residents can take the 2 Line to Chinatown/International District, then transfer to the 1 Line heading towards Federal Way. Riders should expect trains to arrive every four minutes between Chinatown/International District and Lynwood City Center. Where each route runs independently, trains are expected to arrive every eight minutes.
On Saturday, Oct. 25, Sound Transit welcomed about 90 young people ages 15-22 to our first-ever Youth Conference. The day was dedicated to exploring how transit shapes our region -- and how the next generation can help shape its future.
From learning about how light rail expansions are planned and built to discovering career paths in engineering, community engagement, and construction trades, participants got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to keep our region moving.
The countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially begun! With Seattle hosting six matches, we are excited to welcome soccer fans from all over the world to the Pacific Northwest. Sound Transit is working hard to prepare our system and ensure everyone has a seamless and safe experience. You can count on frequent and reliable service across Link light rail, Sounder trains, and ST Express buses to connect you to the stadium and fan events. We want to make sure you enjoy every moment of the festivities without worrying about traffic or parking.
Seattle expects an influx of 750,000 people between mid-June and early July. Public transit will be the best way to get to and from matches, and around the city during this time. As we get closer to the matches, we will have more information about Sound Transit services related to the World Cup.
As winter approaches, we have some tips to help you prepare for the cold weather ahead.
Snow and ice can disrupt transit, but remember mudslides, accidents, and other events can affect your trip as well, so know your options before you go. Check bus and train schedules, use the Sound RideGuide Trip Planner before you leave, and always have a backup plan. Watch or listen to local weather forecasts for updates.
Give yourself plenty of time to get to the station or transit center. Be careful when walking on wet or icy station platforms. Dress warmly as you may need to wait outdoors longer than expected. Buses and trains are unlikely to stay on schedule. Keep in mind that many popular transit apps (such as OneBusAway) do not work when a bus is rerouted.
