1 Line to Federal Way opening announcement in August 2025

Coming soon: 1 Line to Federal Way!

In late August, Sound Transit announced that the Federal Way Link Extension will open for service on December 6. The 1 Line will serve three new stations in South King County: Kent Des Moines, Star Lake, and Federal Way Downtown. This extension precedes the Tacoma Dome Link Extension, which is projected to bring 1 Line service to Pierce County as early as 2035.

Once open, the 1 Line from Federal Way to Lynnwood will span 41 miles, making it the second-longest light rail line in the country, behind only the A Line in Los Angeles.

With trains arriving every eight minutes, passengers will be able to ride from Federal Way to the airport in just 16 minutes, and to downtown Seattle in 50 minutes.

South King County commuters who decide to park and ride can look forward to a 500-space parking garage at Kent Des Moines Station, 1,100 parking spaces in a new garage that replaced surface parking at Star Lake Station, and 400 new parking spaces in addition to existing garages at Federal Way Downtown.

Live wire testing of Crosslake Connection

Crosslake Connection update

Testing on the I-90 floating bridge continues in preparation for the 2 Line Crosslake Connection slated to open in spring 2026.

Once open, it will be the first floating bridge in the world to accommodate passenger rail service. WSDOT has played an integral role in ensuring that trains will be able to run fast, safe, and reliable service.

Next year, all stations from the International District/Chinatown to Lynnwood will be served by 1 Line and 2 Line trains arriving at the platform roughly every 4 minutes during peak hours. Stations served by a single line will continue to see trains arrive every 8 minutes during peak hours.

ST Express Bus

2026 Service Plan: ST Express rider survey

Each year, Sound Transit evaluates and adjusts its services based on the needs of riders, planned service expansions, and financial feasibility. This is called the Annual Service Plan.

As part of the 2026 Service Plan, we are asking ST Express bus riders to fill out a survey about proposed changes to ST Express service between October 6 and November 7.

Your feedback on these proposals will help inform our service planning team about what changes to make to ST Express service effective fall 2026.

Sign up to receive email alerts from Sound Transit and be sure to check the “Service Planning” box to be notified when the ST Express survey goes live.
