Visit our booth at upcoming community fairs and festivals to learn more about the planned light rail extension from Federal Way to Tacoma. Stop by and chat with project staff to learn about the project as we make progress in bringing light rail to more communities in South King and Pierce counties. Here are some of the events we’ll be at this summer and fall:
Project maps now updated with preferred alternative
The Sound Transit Board of Directors identified a preferred alternative for the Tacoma Dome Link Extension during its June 26 meeting. Visit the online open house for updated information, including maps that provide a closer look at our three project segments. The Preferred Alternative includes:
-
South Federal Way (SF) Segment: SF 99-West alignment with a design refinement to transition the alignment to the east side of SR 99 near the King/Pierce County line and the SF 99-352nd Station.
-
Fife Segment: Fife I-5 alignment with Fife Station.
-
Tacoma Segment: Close to Sounder alignment with the Portland Avenue Station and Close to Sounder Station.

We’ve heard a lot of questions about the future of Freighthouse Square. The Sound Transit Board identified the Close to Sounder alignment and station as the Preferred Alternative for the Tacoma Dome Station in June. This action indicates where the Sound Transit Board is leaning based on currently available information; it is not a final decision. The final decision is still two years away, when the Board selects the project to be built, which will follow the publication of the Final Environmental Impact Statement, anticipated in 2027.
Freighthouse Square tenants do not need to move currently. Only tenants of the building at the time of purchase would be eligible for business relocation assistance.
This means: Freighthouse Square and the many small businesses there are open! Show your support to these businesses by continuing to dine and shop there.
We’re connecting with Freighthouse Square tenants to make sure they are informed and have access to resources as the project moves forward. If you or someone you know has a business inside Freighthouse Square and has not heard from Sound Transit directly, please get in touch with us:
