20th Ave S street vacation engagement summary now available
On June 27, 2024, the Sound Transit Board selected the Operations and Maintenance Facility (OMF) South preferred alternative at S 336th St in Federal Way as the project to be built. The OMF South design includes changes to the street network, including:
-
Closing 20th Ave S from S 336th St to S 341st Pl.
-
The permanent closure of a roadway is called a “street vacation”. The closure requires an application and approval by the City of Federal Way.
-
Extending 18th Pl S from S 340th St to S 336th St to replace the functionality of 20th Ave S.
-
Extending 21st Ave S from S 344th St to S 341st Pl to provide access for emergency vehicles.
The proposed public benefits include a multi-use path along the 18th Pl S extension for people walking, rolling, and biking and a public space along S 336th St at the north edge of the facility.
In March 2024, we surveyed people who live, work, and play near the OMF South for their thoughts on these street changes and public benefits. We received over 90 survey responses.

What’s happening next?
The City of Federal Way is reviewing our engagement summary and street vacation application. Sound Transit expects to begin construction of the OMF South project in late 2024 or early 2025. If the street vacation application is approved, 20th Ave S could be closed as soon as mid-to-late 2025, but only after opening the 18th Pl S extension.
