Recap: South Downtown Open House
Thank you to everyone who attended the South Downtown open house on Nov. 15! It was great to see people engaged in the process as we kicked off the South Downtown Hub planning effort.
Approximately 150 people attended the open house! During the event, Sound Transit, the City of Seattle, and King County presented initial ideas and gathered feedback for improving accessibility through the South Downtown neighborhoods of Chinatown-International District, Pioneer Square, and nearby station and transfer points. The feedback will be incorporated into a quarterly workshop series to identify improvement projects in the South Downtown area.
Sound Transit also shared information regarding next steps for the Ballard Link Extension (BLE) to identify topics for discussion at upcoming community information sessions ahead of the new BLE Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), anticipated for publication in late-2024.
To round out the open house, Sound Transit, the City of Seattle, and King County shared information about additional projects in the South Downtown neighborhoods including Sound Transit’s Sounder King Street Station Platform Area Improvements project and the City of Seattle’s Downtown Subarea Plan and Seattle Transportation Plan.
If you were not able to attend the in-person event or you want to review what was shared, meeting materials are available online.
Stay tuned for announcements on the dates and times of the South Downtown Hub planning workshops, community information sessions, and other opportunities for in-person engagement!

Update: South Lake Union Station
The Sound Transit Board of Directors has directed Sound Transit staff to conduct a feasibility study of a new alternative location for the South Lake Union (SLU) Station. On Dec. 15, the Board passed Motion M2023-109 to assess the feasibility of locating a station in the area of 5th Avenue North and Harrison Street, roughly two blocks west of the current Preferred Alternative SLU Station located near 7th Avenue North and Harrison Street.
To meet Board member’s interests to expedite a feasibility study, staff developed an aggressive schedule to conduct a technical evaluation of this alternative and collect public feedback on the new station concept. From January through March, staff will focus on exploring and resolving any design and constructability issues associated with this new idea. In addition, Sound Transit will evaluate implications for ridership, transit integration, environmental concerns, costs, and other considerations. This technical information will be shared publicly in April. Public feedback will be documented and presented to the Board for their consideration in May 2024. At this point, the Board may take action to add this alternative station location into the Ballard Link Extension Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for further study.
The work, resources, and time spent conducting the feasibility study will not impact the timeline for the environmental process and project delivery. Currently, the Draft EIS is expected to be released in late-2024. The target date for service beginning is 2039. However, if the Board decides to add this new station concept into the Draft EIS for addition study, it would trigger an estimated 10-month to 2-year delay to the overall project schedule.
