Long-span bridge solution identified to address unstable soils issue

As we discussed in August, the Federal Way Link Extension faces localized unstable soil conditions encountered during construction just south of where S. 259th Pl. passes under Interstate 5 in Kent. This is an area where the alignment travels through a very narrow area between a wetland and southbound I-5.

We have made significant progress since August. The design-build contractor (Kiewit) stabilized the slope by installing a buttress of quarry spalls (large, angular rocks), and we continue to monitor the site to ensure there are no additional slope stability issues.

After evaluating several design solutions with the design builder, we are advancing a long-span bridge design solution that bridges over the unstable soil area.

As that work advances over the coming months, we will have more certainty about the new schedule and will provide additional updates.

You can learn more about our continuing work to set new opening dates for our Link extensions to the Eastside, Lynnwood, Federal Way and Hilltop Tacoma in today’s Platform blog post by Sound Transit CEO Julie Timm.
