Draft EIS comment period begins Jan. 28

We are excited to announce the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the West Seattle and Ballard Link Extensions project will be available for a 90-day public review and comment period starting on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022! We will offer multiple ways to comment including online, at public meetings, by phone, and via email and mail.

The Draft EIS comment period is an important milestone to provide input and help shape what this project looks like in your community. Your input is a key part of the process and will help the Sound Transit Board understand what is important to you as they consider which alternative to build.

Tune into the next Community Advisory Group meetings

The first Community Advisory Group (CAG) meeting was held virtually on Nov. 16. It was an opportunity for members to learn more about Sound Transit, system expansion, the alternatives we’re currently studying and how we got to where we are today. If you missed it, catch up on the discussion by watching the meeting recording.

The next series of CAG meetings will be broken out by geographic area (West Seattle/Duwamish, Chinatown-International District/SODO, Downtown and Interbay/Ballard) and held the first two weeks of January. The meetings will focus on station planning and be livestreamed for members of the community who want to watch. See the full schedule and details on our project website.

A year in review

This year our primary focus was developing the Draft EIS and helping to prepare the community for what to expect and opportunities to engage once the Draft EIS is published. Like many, we continued to face challenges brought on by the ongoing pandemic, but that didn’t hold us back from finding creative ways to safely engage with the community.

Together, this year we:

  • Had over 11,000 visits to our online open house – – which is available in multiple languages, including Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese.
  • Virtually met with over 65 community groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and social service providers to increase project awareness, gain new perspectives and gather feedback.
  • Hosted nearly 50 individual meetings and 11 webinars to meet with potentially affected property owners early on.
  • Expanded partnership with 11 Community Liaisons with the City of Seattle’s Department of Neighborhoods, including attending over 15 in-person events and conducting door-to-door business outreach, focusing on the Delridge Corridor, Chinatown-International District and Pioneer Square neighborhoods.
  • Fielded more than 500 questions and comments received from the community.
  • Formed Community Advisory Groups to provide another forum to share information and collaborate with community members around issues and tradeoffs.

We are thankful for everyone who has taken the time to attend a virtual meeting, leave a comment online or have a conversation with us about this project. As far as we've come, there's still more to do! In 2022, we will hold our Draft EIS comment period and online public meetings, which will help inform the Sound Transit Board as they confirm or modify the preferred alternative. Until then, we wish you and your family a merry and safe holiday and look forward to engaging with you in the new year.
