Welcome to The Thread. The Office of Social Justice (OSJ) plans to publish this newsletter periodically to help keep people informed about the work we’re doing to build connections, advance justice, and create a more inclusive and equitable Snohomish County. This inaugural edition is going first to our existing partner list, and I want to thank all the partners who do vital work in our communities and whose experiences and expertise are helping shape efforts at the County.
We launched OSJ in 2020, as our community and our nation grappled with the murder of George Floyd and recognized the systemic injustices that so many in our community continue to experience. This office is also the result of the voices in our community who demanded that Snohomish County do more to advance social justice in our government and throughout the county.
As we move forward and face challenges ahead, it is important to remember our mission, vision and values. The mission of Snohomish County government is to meet opportunities and needs of the county’s residents efficiently, equitably, creatively, and collaboratively. Everyone should have the opportunity to thrive, and our job in local government is to serve all people who live, work, and play in Snohomish County.

When I first became a candidate for leadership, I heard "don't make any changes in your first year." I understood the wisdom, but some moments require action before we think we're ready. Our social justice climate calls for it—but for what exactly, and for whom?
This first year has been filled with learning systems, meeting people, and connecting with organizations across Snohomish County. I've been deeply moved by people working hard to meet everyone's needs, and the more connected I became, the more this beautiful place felt like home.
So what's our focus? Across our communities, people lack the same access many of us have. Even among us, there are unspoken challenges—some situational, some systemic. This next year, we'll continue building relationships to collaboratively address concerns impacting access and opportunity.
Our steps include:

Round Two of the Community Investments Initiative will be open October 15 through October 31, 2025.
Snohomish County’s Office of Social Justice investment initiative strives to promote equitable participation by all individuals in social, civic and economic endeavors within Snohomish County. This investment opportunity focuses on these goals so together we can have an impact for our families and future generations.

Across Snohomish County, local organizations are breaking down barriers for underserved youth. Thanks to community investments from Snohomish County Office of Social Justice, these groups are expanding opportunities, strengthening connections, and inspiring hope.
Creator Zone: Unlocking STEAM Opportunities for All
Creator Zone is opening doors to STEAM for underserved youth in Snohomish County. Thanks to funding from OSJ, 14 students attended immersive summer camps—many for the first time—exploring science, technology, and art in hands-on ways. These young learners discovered new passions and capabilities. The impact extends far beyond summer, with several participants now continuing their journey in afterschool programs, building lasting confidence and curiosity.
"Support for Creator Zone allows us to keep our programs low-cost and even free in some cases, so kids from any financial background can access these enriching learning opportunities," said Zea Smith, Director of Creator Zone. Watch the video here.
Everett Recovery Café: Building Community Through Inclusion
Everett Recovery Café fosters connection and belonging for all community members. The Café hosted "Inclusion Infusion: Resource Fair," bringing together 200 attendees and 17 partner organizations for an afternoon of resources, music, food, and meaningful connection. The event celebrated diversity while creating a welcoming space where everyone felt seen and valued. The impact goes beyond the event itself. OSJ's training initiatives have empowered café staff and volunteers with new skills and confidence to better serve their community.
