Executive Somers recently announced that, in partnership with the County Council, we are investing $1.4 million of our federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding into programs that address equity, isolation, and food access among older adults. Executive Somers also issued a proclamation recognizing May 2024 as Older Americans Month in Snohomish County.
“The pandemic increased loneliness, isolation, and related negative health impacts for many Snohomish County seniors. This exacerbated existing challenges older adults with fixed incomes face in accessing services to meet basic needs such as food, housing, and other types of assistance,” said Executive Somers. “This Older Americans Month, we’re proud to support seniors in our community with investments that create connections and support access to life-affirming services.”

Snohomish County is home to more than 840,000 residents who enjoy its mountain vistas, green trees, and clean flowing water in rivers and streams. A group of seasonal county workers have begun the Litter Wranglers’ eighth year ensuring that what people see from their vehicles along county roads is not spoiled by garbage and other things carelessly discarded by passersby.
“The Litter Wranglers are essential to the overall health and wellbeing of our county,” said Executive Somers. “These teams have contributed to a high quality of life enjoyed by all who live, work and play in Snohomish County. They are instrumental in maintaining the county’s natural resources.”
The Litter Wranglers cleaned up 449 miles of roadside in 2023. Snohomish County residents can participate in the program by continuing to report areas along county roads with excessive litter.

Snohomish County is accepting applications for the 2024 Snohomish County Conservation Futures Program (SCCFP) Grants until 5:00 p.m. on August 16, 2024. Up to $10 million is available for distribution in 2024 for the preservation of open space, agricultural land, and timberland.
“Snohomish County is defined by our beautiful and abundant natural resources – protecting them is central to our way of life. We are seeing the direct impacts climate change is having on our local communities and environment, and Snohomish County will continue to lead regional efforts to invest in sustainable solutions. The health of our economy and community depends on us never becoming complacent,” said Executive Somers.
The purpose of this program is to protect land for preservation, habitat, passive recreation and other uses that enhance our local environment and promote livable communities. Examples of land preserved through the Snohomish County Conservation Futures Program include Japanese Gulch Park, Paradise Valley Conservation Area, Bailey Farm and Bob Heirman Wildlife Park at Thomas’ Eddy.
