Snohomish County has invested nearly $3 million in the Snohomish County Food Bank Coalition. In total, the County’s investments have supported the distribution of nearly 26.5 million pounds of food. This investment comes from the County’s federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation.
“Access to healthy and affordable food is the cornerstone of a thriving, vibrant community,” said Executive Somers. “I’m grateful to our partners at the Food Bank Coalition for the innovative ways they have used the County’s investment as well as the work they do every day to make sure vulnerable communities can get their basic needs met. I encourage residents and businesses across the county to support their local food bank year-round.”
The Snohomish County Food Bank Coalition serves nearly 655,000 residents throughout Snohomish County. Food banks rely on generous volunteer support from local community members to operate. Do you have Styrofoam occupying your home? Filling up garages, corners, and closets? Well on Saturday, January 13, you can bring your (clean!) Styrofoam to the Northwest Stream Center in McCollum Park! The WSU Sustainable Community Stewards will be waiting in the parking lot near the Center to collect your Styrofoam, which will then be trucked down to StyroRecycle in Kent.
Collection will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can bring: Rinsed and cleaned to-go containers and food trays; bagged packing peanuts; block packaging, coolers, and Styrofoam EPE sheets with tape removed; and pink, blue, or gray XPS foam insulation.

We still need volunteers to support the 2024 Point in Time count! The annual count allows us to gather crucial data to understand and address homelessness in our community.
Anyone interested in volunteering should email Snohomish County Human Services at Snoco-PITcount@snoco.org.
Earlier this week, Executive Somers announced that the Snohomish County Office of Social Justice (OSJ) is accepting applications for its community sponsorship initiative. The initiative provides up to $5,000 in financial support to organizations working to advance efforts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
“Snohomish County is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion both within our organization and across our communities,” said Executive Somers. “I’m glad this initiative is providing vital support to community-based organizations, and I encourage all organizations working to advance equity to apply for this newest round of funding.”
In 2023, OSJ administered a total of $210,000 to 33 community-based organizations across four funding rounds. Awards were distributed across Snohomish County and projects ranged from back-to-school support for historically underserved families, to supporting access to fresh produce, to job training for formerly incarcerated individuals.
Interested organizations can learn more about the initiative here, and can complete and submit the online application here. Applications must be submitted via the online form or by email by Friday, January 19, 2024.
